"I'm truly sorry," he said calmly.
"I didn't mean to bump into you. I'd be happy to buy you a new phone."
Did he really think that would shut me up?
"Are you serious?! You think you can just buy me off? My phone had all my interview notes! My entire life was in that phone and now...!"
"I'll get you any model you want," he replied in the same calm tone. "Just say the word."
"No, thank you," I crossed my arms. "I don't want your phone. I want my phone. And I want you to watch where you're going!"
I saw a twitch at the corner of his lips. Was that amusement? That made me even angrier.
"Alright, then let me at least—"
"I don't have time!" I cut him off, determined to ignore him. "I have an interview at one of the biggest companies in this city, and I really can't waste any more time talking to you."
"Really?" He raised an eyebrow, as if intrigued.
"Yes! And now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go!"
With that, I turned and marched toward the towering skyscraper in front of us. Whoever he was, he had just ruined my morning. And I couldn't afford that.
What I didn't know... was that this man was the owner of the very company I was about to interview with.
I stood in front of the massive LOCKWOOD ENTERPRISES skyscraper, trying to calm my nerves. Today was a big day. An interview for the position of assistant to the CEO—a job that many ambitious people would kill for. It meant working directly with the head of the company, handling important matters, organizing his schedule, meeting with top business partners... I had to get this.
But my day hadn't started off well. My phone was still lying at the bottom of a storm drain—thanks to that arrogant idiot who ran into me.
I shook my head, straightened my blazer, and walked into the building.
The receptionist directed me to the 40th floor, where the executive offices were located.
When the elevator stopped, I stepped into a sleek, modern lobby. Behind a large desk sat a well-groomed woman in a navy-blue suit. I approached her with a professional smile.
"Good morning, I'm here for an interview for Mr. Lockwood's assistant position."
She looked at me and gave a small nod.
"Please wait here, Mr. Lockwood should be arriving shortly."
I sat down on a comfortable leather couch, nervously running my hands over my knees. I was supposed to be calm. Focused. And then it happened.
The elevator doors opened—and out stepped him.
The man who had ruined my phone this morning.
I froze mid-breath. He saw me too—and while surprise briefly flickered across his face, it was quickly replaced by his usual calm expression.
No. No, no, no. He couldn't be here. This had to be a coincidence.
