“Did you think of me at all?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Austin stepped closer, desperation in his eyes. “Of course I did! I love you, Mirabella. I’ve always loved you. Gaia is part of my past, a past I want to forget. You’re my future.”
Tears brimmed in her eyes as she took a step back, trying to process his words. “It doesn’t feel that way right now. You need to understand how much this hurt me.”
“I know,” he pleaded, his voice raw with emotion. “I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I’ll do anything to make it right.”
Mirabella looked down, her heart battling between anger and the love she still felt for him. “I need time to think, Austin. I can’t just forget what happened.”
“Take all the time you need,” he said softly, his voice filled with sincerity. “But please know that I’m here, and I’ll fight for us.”
As she turned to leave, the weight of uncertainty hung heavily in the air. But for the first time that night, she felt a flicker of hope. The path ahead was unclear, but she knew she had to confront the truth, no matter how painful it was.
The morning sun streamed through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the room, but Mirabella felt anything but warm inside. As she lay in bed, the image of Austin and Gaia’s kiss replayed in her mind like a haunting melody. The hurt and betrayal twisted in her stomach, making it hard to breathe. She turned over, pulling the covers over her head, wishing she could block out the world.
After a restless night, she finally sat up, her heart heavy with uncertainty. The decision she had been avoiding loomed over her—she needed to figure out what she truly wanted. With a deep breath, she reached for her phone and began scrolling through her messages, her thoughts drifting to her mother, Rebecca, back in Italy.
*Maybe it’s time to go home,* she thought, feeling a sense of urgency wash over her. She needed clarity, a moment away from the chaos of her life in California. After a few moments of contemplation, she made her decision: she would return to Italy a week earlier than planned.
Mirabella got out of bed and began packing her suitcase, folding her clothes with care. Each item she placed inside felt like a step toward reclaiming her sense of self. She needed to talk to her mom, to find solace in the familiarity of home, and to reflect on her relationship with Austin without the noise of the city clouding her judgment.
As she zipped up her suitcase, she heard a soft knock on the door. It was Austin. “Mirabella, can we talk?” he asked, his voice laced with concern.
She hesitated, her heart aching at the sight of him. “I’m sorry, Austin. I have to go. I need time to think.”
His expression fell, and he stepped into the room, desperation in his eyes. “Where are you going? Can I at least drive you to the airport?”
Mirabella shook her head, her resolve firm. “I’ll take an Uber. I need some space. I don’t want to talk right now.”
“Please, just let me help you,” he pleaded, stepping closer. “I can’t lose you. Not like this.”
“I know you’re trying to help, but I need to do this on my own,” she replied softly, her voice steady. “I need to figure out if I still want to move to California and be with you. I can’t make that decision right now.”
Austin’s shoulders slumped, the weight of her words hitting him hard. “I understand. Just… please be safe.”
With a heavy heart, Mirabella nodded, avoiding his gaze as she grabbed her suitcase and headed for the door. She could feel the tension between them, a mix of love and heartbreak that was almost palpable. As she stepped out of the house, she took a deep breath, feeling the cool morning air fill her lungs.
