Chapter - 9 The Battle: Part-2

Emma, clearly unconvinced with the superior, glared at Arjun and said to him that if you ever tried to do something fishy, I will catch you and kill you in a blink. After threatening Arjun, she obeyed her superior's command, lowering her weapon. The soldiers began to leave. The superior stayed behind for a moment, placing an officer in charge of the investigation and the godown.

The Moment of Choice

The officer who was left behind for the investigation report looked at Arjun with pitty and started joking about him and said "sorry bro. But its ok. Not all can be the Best version of Beta. Some one has to stand at the last of line? Don't you agree". Arjun really got hurt and angry by this insult, but he was helpless as he could not do anything.

As the officer prepared his report, Arjun remained frozen. His mind was a storm of fear and confusion. Was this really over? Could he just go home and pretend none of this happened?

The officer glanced at Arjun. "Don't even think about it," he said flatly, his voice dripping with suspicion. "I've seen too many of you Arjuns try to pull the same stunt. I'm watching you, and if you even move toward that watch, I'll have you arrested."

Arjun stared at the lifeless body of Rocky, the watch still strapped to his wrist. This was my moment, Arjun thought. This was supposed to be my destiny. I was meant to take that watch, to live 185 years as an Alpha.

But the officer's watchful eyes and the weight of his own fear kept him paralyzed. He felt powerless, trapped in the same cycle of hesitation and self-doubt that had plagued him his entire life. Even among all the versions of me, I'm the weakest Beta, he thought bitterly.

Then, he noticed something—the faint glint of a laser gun lying near his foot. The weapon Rocky had dropped earlier. Arjun's heart raced. He never used a gun in his entirely life, but this was his only chance. He carefully picked up the gun, hiding it behind his back.

The Breaking Point

Arjun stood and faced the officer, the laser gun trembling in his hand. "Step back," he said, his voice unsteady. "Let me take the watch and leave."

The officer frowned, unimpressed and laughed. He pressed a distress alarm on his wrist device, and a shrill sound filled the room. "You've made the worst decision of your life, kid," the officer said calmly. "Reinforcements are coming, and you're as good as done."

Panicking, Arjun stepped forward, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Don't come any closer!" he shouted.

The officer ignored the warning, advancing steadily. "You don't have it in you, weak Arjun. Just put the gun down."

In a moment of desperation, anger and frustration, Arjun pulled the trigger. A bright beam of energy shot from the gun, hitting the officer square in the head. The man crumpled to the ground, lifeless !!

Arjun stared at the body, his hands shaking. He couldn't believe what he'd done. "What... what have I become?" he whispered.

But there was no time to reflect. He rushed to Rocky's corpse, unstrapping the watch and securing it to his own wrist. The device hummed to life, its screen glowing as Arjun entered the year "2050" in the watch. A swirling portal appeared before him, its light bathing the room in a surreal glow.

As Arjun prepared to step into the portal, another portal opened nearby. Emma emerged answering to the distress call, her gun raised. She looked at the corpse of the investigation officer and was shocked. Then she faced towards Arjun and shouted "Stop, Arjun!". "This isn't you. You don't have to do this!"

Arjun turned to her, with tears in eyes of both joy and anger and then replaced by a calm determination look. He smiled faintly, his eyes meeting hers. "You're wrong, Emma," he said. "This is me. It's who I've always wanted to be."

Before Emma could fire, Arjun stepped into the portal. As the light enveloped him, his voice echoed in the room.

"MAIN ALPHA HU!"

And then, he was gone.
