Pick a side. Norton use to tell me, Pick a side and never let them see the other one - it'll be safer that way.
I hated the old fucker was right - but I wouldn't be alive right now, if it wasn't for those words of advice he gave me all those years ago.
I'd chosen a side, a life. It led me to this moment. Crawling, bleeding and broken.
My left leg was a mess, my right arm ruined - I was losing too much blood.
A rattled sob escaped me, half pained, half heartbroken as I crawled further.
"No Wolf has silver hair and eyes - whatever you are, you're not good enough to be mine, or anyone else's mate mate. I reject you, Natalie Grey - and I hope you die tonight."
The words cut as deep as Tate's claws and teeth had - hurt more than him shattering my legs and arms. Hell, even the silver he used was childsplay compared to the severing of our bond.
I thought he had loved me - thought he'd brought me out into Wild Country, the birthplace of Wolves, to finally mark and mate me after we'd discovered each other last year.
He had mated me - and then rejected and brutalized me, leaving me for dead when he was sure I wouldn't survive like an normal Wolf.
But I wasn't just a Wolf. I wouldn't die easily.
I couldn't die easily.
Silver alone was enough to leave my Wolf in tatters, a whining, whimpering mess in the back of my mind I tried desperately to calm and soothe.
But the other side of me responded to my slowing heart - desperate for release after years of being locked away, and the scent of my own blood pulled it to the surface enough I stayed alive.
Consciousness was fleeting, though I found myself in a different place each time I opened my eyes, moving further away from the border of a country I had called home and deeper into territory that was teetering on barbaric - but it was safe.
I had no family. Norton had left for some job deep in Wild Country just after my Shifting, and to be accepted into the Pack, I had to cut all contact with my caretaker.
I couldn't risk them finding out about him, even if he wasn't my father and apart of me still loathed the devil in silk suits for his choices for me - I could never deny the fact he'd saved me as a child, raised me and set me up for a good life.
That is, until I let Tate string me along, letting him fool me into thinking the longer we waited to mark and mate, the more dedicated we were to each other - the stronger our bond would be.
I was so stupid - he never wanted me. He never loved me.
Now - he could never know I survived.

The sun beamed down through a break in the dark clouds, I shivered from the water that clung to my body front crossing rivers. If it hadn't been for my enhanced strength, I might have drowned or been swept by the currents,
I thought I was moving towards safety, that my senses and the Goddess would carry me to a place I could recover and heal somewhere in the mountains.
But as night fell, I heard them - Wolves.
They drifted closer as I managed to sit up, my side and arm forcing me to bite my lip to keep from crying out in pain.
I was in a small valley near the mountain. My naked, torn back pressed against a rock that was cold and jagged, a rasped hiss leaving me as I leaned back, hearing the voices again.
