Vander was glad that her sister wasn't dead. He was worried that her sister had died from the use of past tense words and demeanor.
"Why didn't they also adopt you as well?" He asked before thinking. Foster care tried to keep siblings together. It was looked down upon when they couldn't and usually the seperated siblings would act out, beg, yell, kick, scream, cry and do anything they could to be reunited.
"She's was 9. I was 13. They wanted a kid they could still make an impression on, not one that had turned double digits. Last I heard however, she's doing good." Vi says. The tone of her voices indicates that she want's to stop talking about her younger sister. Vander respects that and takes her plate. Automatically, she grabs it back, her head flying to face the person trying to take the plate away from her. Vander let's it go and when Vi realizes who tried to take it, her face get scared.
Vander reaches for the plate again, and Vi flinches. Hard. Vander has his hand stuck out, open, trying to take the plate, but Vi thinks she's going to get hit. Vander realized how much more intimidating he looks to a 14 year old who is malnourished and with Vander being twice her size.
Vander turns around, fetches a spoon and the bowl with little bits of pancake batter. He puts the spoon and pancake batter in front of Vi and said,
"Hand me your plate, will ya?"
Vi complies and looks at the batter. Vander turned away to wash the plate off and put it in the dishwasher. He started on the rest of the supplies when he was inturpeted.
"Don't you need to clean this?" Vi inquires, touching the yellow bowl slightly. Her eyes gaze away from it and Vander raises an eye brow.
"I gave you it in exchange for your plate. You can eat the left over batter." He states, pointing at the spoon, then he thinks. "If you want."
Vi thinks about it and when Vander turns around to began doing the dishes again, he gets envopled in the routine, zoning out everything.
When he's done, he turns around to see the bowl scraped out and Vi no where to be seen. Vanders heart leaps. She could have gone off into her room, or she could have left entirely. He hadn't read the foster cares information about her. They had called him for emergancy placing and he said yes, without hearing the details. They sent it to him over email, but he hadn't read it. He needed to do that.
His face whips around the kitchen, until he hears the clattering of a spoon. Vi stands at the dishwasher, her spoon fallen out of her hands that had reached for the dishwasher. She cringes at the sound, and looks up at Vander.
The moment she see's his face, she knows she's in for it. His face is full of something she can't pin, and that makes her nervous. His body looks ridged and off edge. His eyes widen when he sees her and the dropped spoon.
"Jeez, you scared me man." Vander starts, clearing up the confusion. He probably saw the look on Vi's face. Vi slowly grabs the spoon, not letting Vander out of her sight. She had told him sensitive information, something he could hurt her with. She felt like she owed him something for making her food and putting up with her when she rudely asked for blueberries in her pancakes like the brat she was.
She places the spoon into the dishwasher and walks around the kitchen island and up to her room.
Vander knocks on Vi's door, and she doesn't respond. Vander doesn't want to intrude, so he knocks again. Vi looked like she didn't sleep to well, so it's not totally out of the realm that she's sleeping right now. Vander knocks again, a little louder this time. When no one responds, he opens the door to see Vi with her eyes closed.
She was sitting up right, a full 90 degree angle, her head was down, her arms in her lap, her eyes closed and snoring softly. Vander closed the door and let her sleep.
He needs to read what the foster care system's information on her anyway.
He sits down at the computer and opens his email. He clicks on the first one that says"

No mention of her sister. None at all. She was in foster care, and Vi wouldn't make something like that up...right?
