"Let's go inside so we can talk, Vander."
The man, Vander apparently, nodded and opened the door fully. Steb stepped in first, then Vi. Vi looked over her shoulder instinctively. She didn't like it when her back was to people she didn't trust. She preferred to go last, making sure that no one could do anything to her without her noticing it first.
Vander saw her looking and smiled. Vi quickly turned her head around and looked at Steb who was looking at her. He then looked up to Vander and smiled. Vander walked around her, and invited her to sit on the couch.
Steb and Vander talked over the normal procedures, what was expected of her, the rules, the way she acts and how school and extra curricular's were to be treated. Vi mostly ignored them, she was standing while Steb sat on a cushioned chair, and Vander sat on a couch. She'd been through this many times before, and she would have to do it again. She zoned off, saying stuff and nodding when she needed too.
Steb then started talking about the complicated stuff Vi had heard before, she had heard it so many times before that she had zoned it out as well. Usually it was about-
"You discuss this in front of a child?" Vander asked, making hand motions to Vi, but he wasn't looking at her, he was looking at Steb. His voice had no venom in it like how she was used to when people would refer to her. Steb looked taken aback.
Vi didn't like how Vander referred to her. Child. She was not a child. She was an adult. She had been through too much to be classified as one. She had protected her sister, raised her as best as she could as if Powder was her own, and seen things, expeirenced things that adults have. She's paid bills, she's been starved, she's been hit, she's been yelled at, she's been locked in her room for days with no food and water. She was not a child.
"Well, yeah." He said, "What's the matter?"
Vander raised his eyebrows.
"She's a child. This is adult stuff." He states simply. Vi wants to explode, wants to yell at him and tell him that she's not a child and that it's her life being changed, not his, so she has the right to know what is going on.
Vander looks to Vi, and then Steb. He gets up, and Vi stiffens. She can't tell if he's mad and take it out on Vi after Steb is gone, getting something for himself, or going to kick Vi out of the room. He goes to her and Vi is ready mentally for just about anything he says.
"Let's go show you your room." He bends down to be on her level. He's around 7 feet away. Vi appearicates the distance, but does not appreciate the way he see's her. As a small, useless child who cannot carry her own weight. She also doesn't like the fact he's directing her away from the conversation and getting out of the room.
Steb get's up from his chair and follows Vander silently. They go up a flight of stairs, Vander in front, Steb in the middle and Vi in the back. Steb holds onto the railing, and Vander goes up qucikly. Vi goes up the stairs skipping two at a time.
They go down a hallway, with three doors. Vander opens the door at the very end of the hallway, it faces the other end of the hallway, the stairs are in the middle of the hallway and if you kept walking straight you'd hit another door. Where that door led, Vi had no clue.
Vander walks in, and steps away so Vi can come into her room. Vi looks around. It's spacious, or more spaciosu than she's used too. There's only a bed, a drawer for her clothes, a couple of books on a bookshelf. Vi take's it all in. It's a lot for her, considering the only thing she has is her bag full of half used school supplies and the clothes on her back.
Vander steps out and says,
"I know it's not much, but hopefully it'll suffice. Make yourself at home. Me and him will be downstairs."
