CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
NAVAE

I drove back to school on Tuesday and it was now the following Saturday. My father did not call back like my mom said he told her. Typical so I wasn't surprised. What did surprise me though, is that Roman and I haven't spoken since the FaceTime call on Monday.

I figured it's because we're both busy. I've been busy with prepping for finals, posting yt videos, TikToks and responding to emails. I have a bunch of people reaching out to collab and I have an appearance on Kai Cenat's stream added to my schedule for sometime during Christmas break. Roman on the other hand, I'm assuming, is also busy with his training and classes and whatnot so it's natural for us not to be able to be on the phone with one another 24/7.

I did try and call him a few days ago but he didn't pick up. I tried the day after that and it was the same thing. I tried again earlier today because it's the weekend and he's usually free on weekends, but still no answer. He hasn't responded to my texts either. It's been jarring.

Best believe that when I finally get a hold of him, he's not gonna hear the end of it. I promise. I'm tryna keep cool.

I pick up my phone and try calling him again. Maybe his Wi-Fi and data not workin' cause ain't no way he could see me calling him and is just ignoring me. He knows better.

"Sorry, the number you have dialed—" I hang up as soon as I'm sent to voicemail. I don't know whether to be mad or worried. So I do the next best thing, I call his mom.

"Oh, hey baby," Ms. Marie says after she answers on the fifth ring.

"Hey, Ms. Marie. How are you?" I ask her, being polite. I'm in the middle of moisturizing my legs because I'm bout to go out with Zara and 'em.

"I'm holdin' on, sweetheart. How are you?" She returns.

"I'm fine," I responded before I cut to the chase. "I'm just havin' trouble reachin' Roman. I've tried calling him for the past week but I haven't been getting an answer and I'm starting to get worried. Has it been the same for you?"

"Oh no, honey. I just talked to him a few days ago. I'm not sure why he ain't answering but ima go call him to see what's up, okay?"

"Okay, thank you so much. You da best," I say.

"Anytime, Navae," she replies before she hangs up.

Hmm. Not him moving funny all of a sudden. What the actual fuck is going on?

I put on my outfit, which consisted of some white sweatpants, Uggs, a long-sleeve white turtleneck top covered by my long beige trench coat. I put my natural hair up in a high bun and did my edges.

Now I know that I won't be enjoying my time out at the mall because this situation is weighing heavy on my heart. My nerves are high. Why is he ignoring me? Is one of the millions of questions swirling in my mind right now. I don't know whether to start crying or to book a flight just so I can go cuss him out.

Grabbing my purse, I walk out of my dorm to link up with Zara, Lafayette and Melanie.

ROMAN

It's been 'bout five days since I spoke to my girl's father. Mind you, the nigga's basically supposed to be my father-in-law. I'm cooked. Master Sergeant Monroe's message ain't go unheard. I'm in a tight spot right now but even though I ain't wanna admit it, I've already made my choice.

Walk away from my daughter 'cause you'll just end up hurtin' her. His words keep bumpin' in my head every time I see her callin'.
