As the group relaxed and enjoyed their meal, the atmosphere was light, everyone joking and laughing as they shared stories. Tezuka observed from his position near the grill, his sharp gaze scanning the group. He noticed Ritsu, who was still in high spirits, teasing Momo and joking with Kikumaru, effortlessly keeping the mood light. Even Momo, despite his earlier frustration, was laughing along with the rest of the group, his earlier irritation forgotten.
Tezuka's lips twitched upward for just a moment, a rare smile that only a few would have noticed. It's not just her energy, he thought. It's the way she knows how to pull the team out of their fatigue. It's not always about strength or perseverance. Sometimes it's about knowing when to lighten the atmosphere.
Ritsu, at that moment, was laughing with Momo and Kikumaru, her mischievous grin still in place from earlier. Her carefree energy seemed to settle over the group like a blanket, making the atmosphere even more relaxed. Tezuka took a mental note of her ability to bring the team together, something he hadn't fully appreciated before. This kind of morale... it matters, too.
As the evening wore on, Fuji noticed Mio standing a little apart from the crowd. She was quiet, as usual, but today, she seemed especially withdrawn. Her gaze was lost in the distance, and there was an air of unease about her that Fuji immediately picked up on. Deciding not to intrude, he made his way toward her anyway, curious but mindful of her space.
Mio, feeling the weight of his approach, stiffened slightly but didn't turn to face him. She stood by the railing, overlooking the campsite, her eyes tracing the darkening sky. It was clear she wasn't fully present, her body language closed off. Fuji's voice was soft when he spoke, careful not to make her feel cornered.
"Are you enjoying the hike?"
Mio hesitated, her eyes darting toward him, but not quite meeting his gaze. Her lips parted as if to respond, but all she managed was a brief nod. A faint smile touched her lips, but it quickly faded. The silence between them grew, thick and uncomfortable, and Fuji sensed that he was pushing her too much.
"I guess it's not easy to get used to being around so many people, huh?" Fuji said with a soft chuckle, his tone light, but understanding.
Mio flushed slightly, shaking her head, but didn't speak further. Instead, she lowered her gaze to the ground, her fingers nervously fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve. The awkwardness lingered, and Fuji realized that the conversation wasn't going anywhere.
"Well, if you ever want to talk, or just... take a break from everything, you know where to find me," Fuji added with a gentle smile.
Mio didn't respond, but she nodded before turning and walking away slowly. Fuji watched her for a moment, unsure if he had made things worse, but he didn't press. He simply followed at a distance, wanting to make sure she was okay. The night air had grown cooler, and as the darkness deepened, Fuji couldn't shake the feeling that he should stay close.
Mio, unaware that Fuji was trailing behind, continued walking toward the cabins. The night was quiet, except for the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind. Her steps echoed faintly in the distance as she walked briskly, her mind racing with thoughts she couldn't quite express.
As she neared the path that led to her cabin, a rustling sound from the bushes startled her. Her heart skipped a beat as something small and fast fluttered past—an unexpected bat, swooping by her face in the dim light before disappearing into the trees.
Mio gasped, her heart racing. Without thinking, she let out a sharp scream, her breath catching in her throat. Instinctively, she stepped back, reaching out for anything to steady herself.
