Caitlyn's POV
———————
The season's early frost still clung to the air as I stared out the grand bay window of our drawing room. The sunlight, pale and delicate, glinted off the frost-laden roses in the garden below, reminding me of all the mornings I had spent there, unseen by prying eyes. My mother's voice carried through the hallway—a mix of sharp instruction and forced politeness as she arranged for yet another gathering at our estate.
It was always the same. Parading suitors and their fortunes before me as if they were wares in a market. Handsome, charming, utterly dull. The lot of them. How they managed to speak for hours without saying anything of consequence was beyond me.
I folded my hands neatly in my lap, adjusting the lace at my wrist—the embroidery hoop abandoned on the table beside me. While I could perform the tasks expected of a lady—sewing, smiling, and nodding in just the right measure—I found them as uninspiring as the suitors themselves. My thoughts strayed to the stables, where my mare was likely pawing at the ground with impatience. The thought of the cool wind against my cheeks and the thrill of riding freely through the woods was far more appealing than the stifling confines of this house.
"Caitlyn," Mother called, her voice laced with authority, though no less melodious for it. I rose, smoothing my gown as I turned to face her. She entered, a vision of elegance and poise, her dark hair impeccably styled beneath her feathered hat. Her presence alone could command the attention of an entire ballroom, and often did.
"Yes, Mother?" I replied, keeping my tone measured.
She smiled, but it was the kind that carried a thousand unspoken expectations. "The queen herself has requested our presence at her garden soirée tonight. An invitation of such magnitude cannot be ignored."
The queen. No one ignored her. Not Cassandra Kiramman, at least. Even I could not deny a slight thrill at the thought of meeting her—Queen Ambessa Medarda, ruler in title and in spirit. Her reputation for wit and decisiveness was as legendary as her command of the court. But even that was not enough to draw me to another tiresome event filled with empty pleasantries.
"I am honored, of course," I replied, adjusting the lace of my cuffs. "But surely such gatherings are not where one seeks meaningful conversation."
Her expression hardened slightly, her fan snapping shut in her hand. "Meaningful conversation is not what secures a future, Caitlyn. You must see that."
I did see it. All too well. The ballrooms were battlefields in their own way, and the stakes were often much higher than any duel or skirmish I could imagine. Still, I could not bring myself to care for a life that would see me caged.
"I shall prepare," I said, bowing my head slightly, though my mind wandered elsewhere. Perhaps, before the dreaded soirée, I could steal away to the woods one last time. There, at least, I could breathe.
As soon as the door closed behind her, the room fell silent, save for the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. I held my breath, waiting for the sound of her footsteps to fade completely down the hall. When they did, a sly smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
