After gym class, I avoided Jake for the rest of the day. It wasn't that I didn't want to confront him about what he'd said—I just didn't know *how*. Every time I thought about his words, my brain spun in a thousand directions, none of them leading anywhere productive.
So, when I got home that evening, I decided to distract myself by baking. It was my go-to stress reliever, and besides, I hadn't made anything sweet in weeks.
I had just pulled out a tray of perfectly golden cookies from the oven when the doorbell rang.
"Jisun, can you get that?" my mom called from upstairs.
"Got it!" I said, wiping my hands on a towel as I headed for the door.
When I opened it, the last person I expected to see was Jake.
"What are you doing here?" I blurted, my hand tightening on the doorknob.
Jake held up his phone, looking more annoyed than smug for once. "You left your notebook in the library. Thought you might want it back."
I stared at him, my mind racing. He'd walked all the way to my house for *that*?
"Oh," I said, taking the notebook from him. "Thanks."
Jake shifted on his feet, glancing past me into the house. "Something smells good."
"It's cookies," I said before I could stop myself.
He raised an eyebrow. "You bake?"
"Is that so hard to believe?"
"A little," he said, smirking now. "Didn't know you had a domestic side."
I rolled my eyes, stepping back to close the door. "Thanks for the notebook. You can leave now."
"Wait," Jake said, stopping the door with his foot. "Are you really going to make me walk all the way back without offering me a cookie?"
I hesitated, torn between slamming the door in his face and feeling guilty about how tired he looked.
"Fine," I said, stepping aside. "But just one. And you're not staying long."
Jake grinned, stepping inside. "Fair enough."

A few minutes later, Jake was sitting at the kitchen table, munching on a cookie like he owned the place.
"Okay, I'll admit it," he said, licking a crumb off his thumb. "These are amazing."
"Don't sound so surprised," I said, crossing my arms.
He leaned back in his chair, studying me with an expression I couldn't quite read. "You're full of surprises, Jisun."
I looked away, busying myself with tidying up the counter. "Don't get used to it. This doesn't mean we're friends or anything."
