Year 2001
▀█▀ he sharp scent of coffee filled the precinct, mingling with the hum of activity—the rhythmic tapping of keyboards, the buzz of phones ringing, and the occasional murmur of hushed conversations. Sylvia Vermont stepped through the door, her eyes scanning the room with a mix of curiosity and caution. The cold case unit. The place where unsolved mysteries went to die or, if they were lucky, be resurrected.
Her boots clicked against the worn floor, the sound sharp in the otherwise subdued atmosphere. It didn’t take long for the whispers to start. She could feel the stares from behind desks, the knowing glances exchanged between veterans. The new recruit. The fresh blood.
She didn’t mind the murmurs. It was to be expected—after all, fresh blood was hardly a cause for celebration in a place like this. The cold case unit was not a department people fought to be assigned to. It was a graveyard of long-forgotten crimes, cases too old, too convoluted, or too controversial for anyone to want to touch. Some of these detectives had been here for years, dragging themselves through unsolved case after unsolved case, trying to make sense of deaths that had been buried by time and politics. They didn’t want anyone messing things up.
Sylvia had been assigned here because of her reputation. A rookie, yes, but one with a knack for seeing connections that others missed. Her mentors, the ones who had vouched for her, had done so with the understanding that she wasn’t here to chase headlines. No, she was here because she had the patience for it—the persistence to follow a trail no one else cared about. She didn’t mind the slow burn of cold cases. Sometimes, a case needed to marinate in the darkness before it revealed its truth.
She moved toward her desk, its surface cluttered with old files, yellowed newspaper clippings, and a forgotten mug that had once been white but now had a permanent stain of coffee at the bottom.
A few of the detectives glanced at her again, a couple exchanging glances that were heavy with doubt. One of them, a grizzled officer with salt-and-pepper hair and a permanent scowl, looked at Sylvia as she flipped through the file.
“You're sure about this one?” he asked, his voice low and gravelly.
The department had its doubts about her, and she knew she had to prove herself. The cold case unit wasn’t a place for novices, and if she couldn’t solve something soon, she’d become just another statistic in the precinct’s long history of failed attempts.
“Yeah,” Sylvia said, her voice steady. “I’m sure.”
The room fell silent for a moment, the others returning to their work, but the weight of their skepticism lingered. Sylvia had no intention of letting that stop her. The scent of stale coffee still hung in the air, but it wasn’t the only thing filling the precinct. There was something else—a sense of urgency that had been missing for years. It was the spark she needed to ignite a case long buried. And she was just getting started.
