Nymphs

I've never been one to believe in magic. I relied mostly on logic to carry me through life. But when my best friend, Lydia, proved my simple, safe logic to be just a comfort shield, 🛡 I chose to deny it until I had no choice but to face the truth.

Nymphs aren't what you would expect them to be. In Greek mythology, they're playful, flirtatious, alluring, and most of all, protective over the nature in which they reside. Lydia was pretty well herself after she turned; with the addition of her thirst for blood.

I always knew she was boy-crazy, but I never imagined my best friend would come to murder many men she and I both once cared for (and some of which got what they deserved.)

Lydia didn't always tell me everything, but I had a way of finding out. It was one of the things she loved and hated about me; I was nosy, as she put it, and determined to find the truth no matter how my parents tried to protect me from it.

After the accident, I searched for as much information as I could find. I found that nymphs are typically harmless unless provoked, with the exception of the Maenads. These were a type of nymph who were mainly destructive and violent. Maenads were born of the blood from the Greek God Uranus's castration, and born in such blood, they took joy in inflicting pain on men in the same fashion that they were created. Many of these nymphs were known to be suicidal, as they eventually came to hate their own existence after a lifetime of torturing the one puzzle piece they truly needed to feel complete: men.

After months of searching, I came to understand that my best friend Lydia was now a Maenad, and possibly nothing could stop her. I would still try, regrettably, and fail. I never believed much in fate, but after her transformation, I came to see the connections in Lydia's personality and the creature she became. Then, I didn't think much of it because what I cared about was saving her. But as time passed, I began to wonder if what happened to Lydia was no coincidence; that maybe it was some divine source out of our control. Maybe it was her destiny.

Before Lydia's problem, I was never one to believe in magic. Today, I believe it was my destiny to find the truth, and to try my best to save my best friend.
If it was my fate to save her, I failed gruesomely.
