I stare down at a square of construction paper.

Scared.

Why? I don't have a clue.

I use both hands to open it.

It's words and a QR code.

"When detention's emptiness echos near, I fill the silence with a song that clears. Its rhythm revives my restless soul, and music's beauty makes me whole.
- Cirus H."

The QR code is hand drawn, green on white paper. God, the amount of time it must've taken to capture all this detail.

I use my phone to scan the code, and instantly it takes me to Apple Music

I use my phone to scan the code, and instantly it takes me to Apple Music.

A playlist appears named "For you, from me."

Those were the last words Cirus said...

I put in my playlist, eager to hear the songs in the queue.

My heart swelled with happiness. Of course, it was a small act but it felt like a grand gesture.

A cheesy smile was plastered on my face as I hit the play button.

Sweet by Cigarettes After Sex started it off.

Cirus was the most intentional, considerate, thoughtful guy ever. I can't appreciate him enough.

Detention was transformed from a boring hell into a calming haven. I felt myself sink into the lyrics of every song.

"Vittoria, listen with care." said the description.

Cirus' music taste was impeccable.

Is it bad that I pressed download as soon as I finished the first song?

The playlist is filled with foot taps, swaying, finger drums, and head nods.

By the time Atlantis by Seafret was over, a new song started.

My phone was in my pocket, so I had to get it out to read the title of the unfamiliar guitar strums.

As I slid my hand into my pocket, a hum floated into my ears.

"HmmmMmmmMmmm."

A run so sweet in a tone so familiar.

I paused, itching to hear more. I silently begged the seconds to turn into minutes, to hear the rest of the song. I would wait till the end to see the artist and title.

The first lyrics began:

"In the forest of my soul, where trees preside
One stands tall, bark-like hair, and branch-like eyes
Deep brown pools, like earthy streams
Reflecting the beauty that my heart esteems"

I know this voice.

It belonged to the person who gave me the QR code in the first place.

Cirus is singing this song.

The chorus began.

"You're the oak that shelters me from life's wild storm
Your freckles skin, a constellation that forms a map to hidden treasure, and secrets untold
In your embrace, my roots grow deep, my love, forever to hold"

The gentle strums of his grandfather's guitar bounce around my ears like hyper children. I, of course, don't mind. I close my eyes, letting the song take me.

I felt the room fall away, leaving only the two of us. Me, in this seat. Him, on this song. His voice, the guitar, the lyrics- everything blended in a symphony of emotion that left me breathless.

A cord was interrupted by the bell.

It was time to go.

Never, in my time here, have I hated the bell.

I hated the bell now.
