The day for the Karasuno team to leave was rapidly approaching, and Kuroo constantly worried about his dynamic with Yachi and their relationship. He worried that she might think he was going too fast if he asked her out, considering that they mostly interacted via texts. But at the same time, he didn't wanna let her go, not without knowing when they might meet again and Go knew how long that would be.
Kuroo tried to hide his worries from everyone, even Kenma and of course Yachi.
But however much he tried to do that, there was one person's radar he couldn't escape.
Yaku.
Two days before Karasuno were to leave, a little before curfew found Kuroo mindlessly bouncing a ball against the wall when someone tapped him on the shoulder, startling him quite seriously. He turned around to find an unimpressed Yaku standing behind him, staring at him dubiously.
"H-hey! Didn't see ya there" Kuroo replied shakily. His mind was on other stuff.
"Yeah, I can see that" came a dry reply.
"Well, I wasn't expecting you so-"
Were you hoping a certain someone else would appear?"
"No! Of course not! Why would I-"
"You are worried about what you should say to Yachi aren't you?"
And just like that, Kuroo deflated. There was a long pause before he replied in the smallest voice Yaku had heard come out of him.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"What do you mean why? Isn't it a reasonable thing to be worried about?"
Of course, it is. But what exactly are you worried about Kuroo? It's not like you to worry about anything to the extent that you don't notice things you do unconsciously like seeing to it that Kenma doesn't play games while eating and defend Lev when I start lecturing him too much."
Gosh, had he really missed out all that much? Kuroo looked helplessly at Yaku who sighed and sat down on the floor, motioning Kuroo to do the same.
"Tell me this Kuroo, are you worried that she will reject you if you ask her out or are you confused about your own feelings towards her?"
"I am not confused about my feelings for her. I know I love her" Kuroo replied firmly.
Love huh, not like, Yaku thought.
"Then whatever is worrying you?"
"Yaku you know her right? She won't, no, she can't say no. What if she says yes because she can't say no or something? What if she actually doesn't like me? What if it's just me in this? I don't know, I honestly don't. What if, what if I do something rash and end up destroying what we have now? What if it all goes...wrong?" Kuroo trailed off.
Yaku clicked his tongue.
"But what if it all goes right?"
Kuroo looked up at him.
"What if Yachi is waiting for you to confess to her that you like her, because like you say she is too shy to say anything to you and also probably doesn't want to assume thinking she's in this alone too."
"Well..."
Yaku patted Kuroo on his shoulder. Normally, the mother hen of the team, Yaku wasn't one to concern himself with Kuroo. Lev and the second years kept him busy. It was mostly Kai and rarely Kenma who comforted or talked to Kuroo when they lost a game or two. But that didn't mean he couldn't of course. If he felt someone needed a talk or hug, Yaku would be there, ever willing to give his unwavering support.
Kuroo's face had a lot of emotions flitting through. Anxiety, tension, worry, scepticism, doubt. All rather strange emotions for someone like Kuroo to don. But mostly there was confusion writ large on his face. He dropped his head into his hands.
"Kuroo, you should tell her how you feel about her," Yaku said softly.
Slowly, Kuroo lifted his head, a look of decision on his face.
"Yeah, I guess I should"
"Of course, you should! What do you mean by I guess Kuroo?? You both deserve to know each other's stance on the matter!" Yaku said, exasperated now. Kuroo grinned his relief at him. Truly, sometimes two heads were better than one worried head and tired body.
Tomorrow. Tomorrow, he'd tell Yachi about it all. He'd tell her everything he felt for her and ask her to be his girlfriend. If she said yes, he'd be the happiest boy alive and if she said no, well. He'd be heartbroken of course, but at least he had his answer and could move on. But Kuroo really really hoped it wouldn't come to that. He didn't think he could bear it after all if she rejected him.
I must really love her, huh?
