Most stories have auspicious beginnings, but this story is about an ordinary boy named Shen Li who lived in an ordinary house with an ordinary family.

His father was a strict authoritarian who expected respect and obedience from his sons. He owned a small business which was relatively successful. He worked hard so that his family could have the best things, wear nice clothes and live in a large house. To do this his father was barely there, Shen couldn't even say that this man had had a hand in his upbringing.

His mother on the contrary worked in a busy office, managing a whole floor of staff, she was kind, caring and loved by everyone. She made sure she was home every night to make dinner for them. She went to all of their school functions, attended every parents evening. She was soft and nice to cuddle.

His brother Chan Li was six years older and probably the coolest thing Shen had ever encountered. He was tall, attractive, he looked a lot like their father. All of the girls in his year still talked about his brother, even though he had left school to go to a nearby technical college. His brother wanted to be an interior designer. As far as their father was concerned Chan was studying architecture, which was a higher paying job. His brother had ignored everything his father said and enrolled in technical art/graphic design instead.

Shen Li was the youngest in this happy family, he was soft too, just like his mother, his brother always said Shen was nice to squish. He wasn't a quiet person, he wasn't popular, he wasn't a complete social outcast, but somewhere in-between. He had a gang who he would call his best friends, they were all geeks like him, they didn't give a fuck what the rest of the school thought of them.

So this happy family lived together (sometimes) under one roof, they even had a dog who was called Ginseng. She was a black Labrador and they all loved her (even the old man) a lot. Shen remembered when his father travelled he would always bring back a packet of sweets which were Ginseng's favourite, he would place them somewhere in his bag and the dog would scratch and scrabble at the holdall until she found a zip which she could get her nose inside to get her treat.

It's funny how all these things become memories which you treasure.

Shen had his own bedroom, Chan had his own bedroom and his parents room was on the top floor of the townhouse. Their house was on a nice estate, posh maybe, guess you could call them your average middle-class run of the mill family. His mother took them to school everyday in their nice BMW.

Even though his father was strict and rarely at home Shen knew he was loved by his father, he might not say it directly but the love was there. Collectively his mother and father loved him, his older brother and their dog very much. Everything was happy, averagely happy pretty much day after day, month after month, year after year.

Until he reached the age of fifteen.

As they got older his gang were invited to more and more parties, people all of sudden wanted to invite them. Silly as it seemed now, the younger more stupid Shen, his friends Faye, Harry, Ben and Leigh all decided to go to one of these house parties, usually ran by the older kids who had left for college.
