What if? Aspen Survived

Aspen remembered meeting Newt as clear as day. He remembered waking up in the box, he remember seeing the glade for the first time.

He remembered the maze, he remembered the noises, he remembered the fear. But he also remembered the love, the calm.

The momentarily lapse in judgement where he let himself fall in love long enough to be hurt.

As Aspen stared at Newt's name carved into that stone along with so many others, he couldn't help but remember reading it as he carved his own name into the wall all that time ago.

Aspen hadn't noticed the dampness on his cheeks until he felt a tear drop from his face, landing on the ground below.

He lowered himself to the ground, turning around and leaning against the stone as he pulled his knees against his chest.

His sobs were silent as they raked through his body, the only sound to be heard from him being his sniffles.

Aspen was unsure how long he'd stayed there, but when he finally looked up at the open sky above, the sun had long since set.

He watched the stars as imagined for just a moment that Newt was beside him once more, staring up at the sky and chatting absentmindedly.

Aspen wasn't sure what he believed in. He wasn't sure if there was a god, or an afterlife, or anything like that. But if there was?

He knew that Newt would be staring up at the stars along with him.
