Saying Goodbye - Ducky's funeral through Gibbs's eyes as he mourns the loss of his best friend and says goodbye.
One shot! Anyone missing Gibbs in Ducky's tribute episode like me? Ducky should have gotten a funeral and we all deserved a Gibbs cameo...
I had thought of writing this story ever since watching Ducky's tribute episode. I read in one of the interviews where the writers spoke about how they decided to bring Tony for this episode. Yeah, I was happy we got a Tony cameo and in a way his appearance was the right way to end that episode.
But Gibbs was the one who had known Ducky the longest and had the deepest connection with him. Him not making an appearance in that episode was disappointing. But at the same time I totally agree with the writers that the episode was about Ducky and if Gibbs had come it would have become about him and that if Gibbs does come it shouldn't be for a few minutes cameo. Still understanding all that doesn't stop my illogical mind from missing Gibbs and feeling sad for not getting a funeral scene for Ducky.
The writers had also mentioned in that interview how at first they wanted to bring all the characters from across all the shows together and how they wanted to do an Avengers level funeral scene for Ducky. But alas the budget didn't allow for it to happen. So then my mind immediately went well, that's what fanfiction is for right? That's how this story was born.
This is my take on how Ducky's funeral must have been held through Gibbs's eyes and showing Gibbs saying goodbye to his life long best friend!

"Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on forever. As long as a person is remembered Death can't really take them ever. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart, For as long as there is memory, they'll live on in the heart. And cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone. Love lives on and through love The dead are never really gone. They forever live on...
-Through love they live on.
'DUCKY'S FUNERAL THROUGH GIBBS' EYES'
Funerals..... For someone who spent more than half of his life surrounded by death, he could never get used to them. But then who could? Can one ever really be not affected by a funeral? Bearing witness to the last moments of a person's life, watching the person you loved get sealed inside a box and left to rot for the rest of eternity? How could a person's entire existence, their whole life, everything that they were, everything that they meant, everything they loved and lived for, everything that made them, them could ever be truly put away just like that?
Yeah, funerals were never a pleasant affair.
He remembered reading somewhere that said, 'We all die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, when somebody says your name on Earth for the last time'. It made it seem like, as long as one was remembered, they were never really gone or truly dead.
