What makes a good main character?

When developing a main character and his story, an author must consider three things: Likeability, proactivity, and capability. Likeability is to do with empathy. Readers tend to empathise with the main character, wanting him to win and succeed at his goals. Sometimes, the main character will be unlikeable and this can make for a compelling story too. Proactivity refers to the character's ability to defeat the bad guys and save the girl. However, this does not mean that he is actually good at doing what he does. You don't want a hero who is 100% proactive and capable because then there is no struggle. The three scales will change and go up and down through the story but generally, he should increase in his capability so that he can win by the end of the story and it's believable.
