Chapter 4 - An Unexpected Guest

The day slowly faded away. My newfound companions were determined to confront Tommy, but he remained mysteriously absent. As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the first day of school, I couldn't help but hope that not all future days would be as chaotic.

"I believe we're heading the same way," Trent remarked, observing my walking direction. "Do you mind if I accompany you?"

"Of course!" I replied, a surge of excitement fluttering in my stomach.

We bid farewell to the rest of the group and embarked on our journey, side by side.

As Trent and I walked together, the tension from earlier in the day seemed to melt away, replaced by a sense of ease and comfort in each other's company. The late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over us as we strolled along the familiar path home, the sound of our footsteps echoing against the pavement.

As Trent and I walked together, the tension from earlier in the day seemed to melt away, replaced by a sense of ease and comfort in each other's company. The late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over us as we strolled along the familiar path home, the sound of our footsteps echoing against the pavement.

"So, Marilyn, tell me more about yourself," Trent said, breaking the comfortable silence between us. "What's your family like?"

I smiled, feeling a sense of warmth spread through me at his question. Talking about my family was always a bittersweet topic for me, but with Trent, it felt safe to open up.

"Well, I just moved here with them" I said awkwardly trying to find out what to say "They are really religious and strict... But good, they are good to me"

"Bet they love that you are listening to all that death music" He said smirking at me. At least he found humour in this.

"They don't know" I said blushing "I grateful for my Walkman... some reason they let me blast the Cranberries in my room though"

Trent chuckled at my response, his easygoing demeanor putting me at ease even more. "Ah, the power of the Cranberries," he remarked with a playful grin. "Well, at least you've got some musical freedom in your own space."

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief that Trent didn't judge me for my family's strict beliefs. "Yeah, it's nice to have a little escape," I admitted, grateful for the small moments of solace my music provided.

"It does make a lot of sense," he nodded, his expression turning thoughtful.

"What does?" I inquired, curious about his train of thought.

"You have this incredibly wholesome vibe about you," he replied, locking eyes with me. "It's like sugar."

His words made me blush, but at the same time, they irked me. I realized that I didn't want to be defined solely by my wholesomeness. I didn't know exactly what I aspired to be, but I knew that the wholesome vibe was not it.

Trent's comment left me with a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts. I couldn't deny the attraction I felt towards him, yet his perception of me as 'wholesome' struck a nerve. It forced me to examine the expectations placed upon me and the image I projected to the world. Deep down, I knew that being seen as a wholesome girl wouldn't make me cool in his eyes.

"I appreciate the compliment, Trent," I replied, a hint of uncertainty in my voice. "But, I don't know if 'wholesome' is exactly what I'm going for. I mean, sure, my family might have their rules, but there's more to me than just that."

Trent shifted his gaze, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "I get what you mean," he said slowly. "Sorry if I oversimplified things. You're right, there's always more to a person than meets the eye."
