The following morning,
a loud bang on the door only earned a groan and turn in the bed from Donald. It wasn't enough to wake him up. It wasn't until the woman of the house hobbled up the steps herself to get the man up, alerting him that he only 20 minutes to get ready.
His mind was telling him to stay down. Telling him that he was grown ass man and wasn't obligated to go to church— but his heart was saying another thing. Getting up and going to church was least Donald could have done in efforts to show his appreciation of being able to be here.
Looking into the mirror, all Donald could see was how bloodshot his eyes were. He remembered the previous night, with most of night pertaining around hanging with his boys in Oakland and getting high.
The last thing he needed was to get in trouble for being strung out . The perfect idea came in mind however, and he was sure that it would work.
He quickly got dressed, fixing himself fairly well. He blended in perfectly with the rest of the family, going downstairs and grabbing a quick bite to eat.
"Well. It seems like you enjoyed yourself last night, am I right?"
"Oh y-yeah. It was cool." the man replied, trying his best to look down. He got the just of what his elder was trying to do, immediately dropping his idea down into play.
"Aunty, my allergies have been terrible. They started acting up really bad last night. Do you have anything to help with that?"
"I have some Benadryl."
Donald nodded, hoping that the women would give in even more and allow for him to stay home.
"It's the non-drowsy kind. So you should be okay in church. Let's get going everybody!"
All the man could do was sigh. At least he tried. He peered over to see Joel and Dalvin cracking up at the fact that he even tried the ookie doke with Cecily. She wasn't new to this at all.
Arriving at church, almost of all of the pillars were filled with people. Finding a spot to sit, Donald sat back and took in all of the atmosphere as much as he could.
He made it a virtue to keep his faith up and have a relationship with the Most High, but it never got to the point of him attending church regularly. After the passing of his mother, he couldn't get himself to be an avid goer— especially for what he knew to be true about the church and how they treated his mother at one point.
"Grace and peace brotha'...Hope all is well."
"Oh yeah...yes, likewise." Donald spoke, standing up out of his spot as members of the church came around in greeting. He could tell that his aunt had been around talking, as it seemed like most eyes were on him.
