This story is based on true events, and some elements have been fictionalized in order to protect the identity of the characters.

Hey! My name is Alex. This is my first Erasmus+ experience in Madrid, Spain.  At every beginning of a new part or chapter I will put an iconic song that you can listen to while reading the story or just explore more of Spain through music as well. So let's begin!

I can't believe I'm finally alone

I can't believe I'm finally alone. Leaving Bucharest and my family behind for 3 months and a half can't be that bad, can it? Well, I took my baggage which was weighing 23 kgs and couldn't actually lift it but I managed. I have ordered an Uber and got to the residence where I should spend those 3 months and a half, but I still don't know why he rated me 2 stars out of 5 just because I didn't speak Spanish. Anyways, I have checked in my room, got to know my roommate, and then left to get some groceries because I had nothing. Nothing at all. I went inside the store and everything was in Spanish, but the discounts were true, so I have bought groceries worth 12 Euros, that would've been worth at least 30 Euros in Romania. After buying and sorting everything (thank you self-checkout), I was feeling very exhausted so I went to sleep.

The next day, I had the best cultural experience ever, because it was the first day at a foreign university. I have met a couple of other people from different countries (also Erasmus) and students that actually studied at this university (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos).

I don't know how I managed to talk to this many people in just one day

I don't know how I managed to talk to this many people in just one day. I tend not to. At first, I wanted this experience to be finished as quickly as possible because I am alone here. The only Romanian from my university, and the only one from Romania. Therefore, I couldn't talk in my native language at all so I had to learn a little Spanish in order to get started, mainly because any activities in Spain require the knowledge of Spanish. For example, going to the pharmacy, going to the supermarket, any official business, and not every teacher here knows English at a proficient level. Don't get me wrong, most of them try to explain as simple as possible the information to Erasmus students, and I endorse fully that effort.
