Jiang Long looked at Bai Wei as he blocked the assassin's magic. For the first time, Jiang Long felt that Bai Wei looked very strong and resolute.

Before, Jiang Long's impression of Bai Wei could be summarized in two words: cowardly and entitled.
It was only today that Jiang Long felt there might be more to him than meets the eye.

Jiang Long's mind was in turmoil when Bai Wei slowly turned to look down. His shoulder was slumped at an awkward angle and the front of his coat was quickly dyed red from the gaping wound. Bai Wei observed for a moment before closing his eyes and falling forwards.
Instinctively, Jiang Long caught Bai Wei in his arms. He quickly called for a doctor and then went to subdue the assassin.

Bai Wei woke up in an elaborate room filled with the scent of herbs. A person in servant's clothes saw his small movements and quickly ran out, leaving him alone.
A sharp pain in his shoulder cut through Bai Wei's daze as he tried to sit up.
Right.... he almost died immediately upon entering the mission world.
"You crazy system!! Are you trying to kill me?!?!" Bai Wei shouted into the open air.
"Eep! I'm sorry host, the target was in mortal danger so I acted without thinking. T^T" the system said in a panicked tone.
Bai Wei heard its young voice and his anger rescinded. He suspected that the system was purposefully using a child-like voice to garner his sympathy, but he shelved the thought and continued "Okay fine, but I need some kind of compensation. You almost killed me. What would you have done if I died immediately upon entering the world?"
" Eep! I- um...Here! A newbie package! It's supposed to be given after completing your first mission, but I can make an exception and give it to you now!"
A screen popped up in front of Bai Wei, showing the contents of the package. With the package, he could select one free item and skill from the systems catalogs. Bai Wei observed the cartoon puppy in the corner of the blue pop up that was giving him a thumbs up and wondered if it was the mascot of the system.
He swiped through the catalogs for items and skills and ,after a bit of deliberation, he made his choices: a pain shield and the acting skill.
After confirmation, he immediately activated the pain shield and began reading through this world's information.
This world was a C grade world with historical fantasy setting. It was the standard vague elizabethan era aided by fantastical elements like magic, monsters, and heroes. It was a monarchical society with grand dukes of the north and an imperial family that actually cared about the countries citizens.
Truly a world of fantasy.
The world's plot line centered around the Aristocratic Academy of Magical Arts and , more specifically, the academy's very first scholarship-admitted commoner: Jia Jinsing.
In the plot, Jia Jinxing unintentionally gains the affection of many men of high standing while attending the academy. Suddenly, all of the heirs of the most powerful men in the country knelt at Jia Jinxing's feet and begged for her affection. However, along with this affection came an equal amount of unwanted attention. Suddenly, Jia Jinxing found herself with innumerable obstacles that obatruct her peaceful life.
From there, she undergoes many challenges, facing off against villains who want to possess either her or her position. Jia Jinxing emerges victorious and marries the crown prince, spending the rest of her days in bliss.
And who was Bai Wei in all of this you ask?
Glad you asked, he was one of the aforementioned villains. Bai Wei was the youngest son of a baron that fell in love with Jia Jinxing at first sight and became determined to own her by any means necessary. Later in the book, he even went as far as to kidnap Jia Jinxing. Of course, this plan fails and Bai Wei is then sentenced to death when the crown prince, Jiang Long, investigates his family and finds them guilty of multiple crimes.
"So... basically, this is a Mary Sue campus novel. System, care to explain why I am a useless cannon fodder?"
"I don't know host T^T, don't blame me. This stuff is all the hardware's domain. I only manage the system space and host interactions" the system responded.
"Oh, so you are just a customer service application. Okay, sorry." Bai Wei said.
The system, peeved off by this comment, was about to argue when the hardware spoke.
"There are two main criteria for choosing vessels to inhabit. The first is proximity to the plot of the world and the second is the capacity to fit the host's soul. The host's soul is very unique so it is difficult to find a vessel that can withstand the host's soul. With this in mind, may the host be more understanding when he inhabits some less than fortunate bodies in the future".
The hardware's voice was cold as it spoke in a very polite, professional manner. However, the pleasantries could not disguise the meaning hidden within them.
His personality was too twisted to inhabit a good person.
The three geared up to duke it out in a battle of words when the door opened, stopping them in their tracks.
From the door, a young man with meticulously combed black hair walked in. He was dressed in a regal golden uniform and a sword was attached at his hip. His entire demeanor was refined and elegant, yet you could feel a hidden power expressed in each of his movements. His ruby red eyes carried a deep suspicion towards Bai Wei as he approached.
Bai Wei immediately recognized the man. He was Jiang Long, the crown prince of this kingdom and the male lead of the world's plot line.
Jiang Long observed him as he walked into the room and bowed slightly.
"Despite our strained relationship, I feel it is only right that I thank you for saving my life".
Hearing this, Bai Wei lowered his head as he thought 'Saving a life...Wait.... Is Jiang Long my capture target?!'
[Correct, his current favorability is -10. Fighting!]
Bai Wei was stunned when the hardware responded to his thoughts, but averted his attention to Jiang Long.
Right now, the mission was the most important.
He mulled over the matter for half a second before coming up with a plan. His eyes suddenly welled up with tears as he looked sadly at Jiang Long with a wistful expression.

Jiang Long looked at Bai Wei with many thoughts running through his mind. He was very grateful to Bai Wei for saving his life, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Maybe this was another one of Bai Wei's schemes to attract Jia Jinxing's affection?
It made sense when considering his past actions. In the past, Jiang Long had seen him commit heinous crimes to obtain jewel so that he might please her. He even outright attacked Jiang Long, the crown prince of this country, so that she might look his way. Something as simple as staging and up pending an assassination plot seemed very normal when compared to his previous actions.
Hundreds of thoughts flashed through Jiang Long's mind as he tried to decipher Bai Wei's intentions, but nothing could have prepared him for what happened next.
Tears began streaming down Bai Wei's face as he looked at Jiang Long. Ignoring his wind, he rushed out of the bed and jumped to hug Jiang Long.
"Oh thank god you're alive!! I'm so glad!" Bai Wei said in between choked sobs while hugging Jiang Long.
