Bai Wei found himself floating in an endless void. His body felt like it was engulfed in water. It ebbed and flowed along an unseen current. He felt that he was drifting somewhere, but it was impossible to tell where because of the complete darkness that surrounded him.
Along with the current, wave after wave of calmness and serenity washed over him as his last moments resurfaced.
He had died.
He could still feel the pain of the needle as the executioner administered a lethal injection into his bloodstream. His mother's suppressed sobs rang in his ears as she watched him leave the world. She had always said that he would meet retribution for his crimes one day, but neither of them ever thought that it would end up like this.
After all, it was insane for a small-time star thief like him to be executed.
But, he was not executed on the terms of piracy. He was no mastermind like they thought, he was a scapegoat. A low rung bottom feeder in their star pirate group that happened to look a bit like the captain. A poor soul pushed out by his comrades to die a painful and unwilling death. Still, at least he was able to take care of his mother with the money he received from the job. He hoped she would be able to live well even without him around.
Bai Wei stared emotionlessly into the black void. His memories flashed before his eyes on repeat, growing more faint with each repetition. He too was slowly fading away. His body grew increasingly weightless as time passed. Before long, he would cease to exist.
Bai Wei felt a sense of relief wash over him with this realization, he closed his eyes and prepared to succumb to the void.
Suddenly, a chill ran across his spine, and his hair stood on edge. He felt he was being watched, but what could be watching him in this endless void?
Before he could process it, a jolt of energy rushed through his body and he began to resolidify. A sudden sense of gravity took him by surprise and he fell face downwards onto the floor, scraping his hands as he tried to catch himself. The floor was hard and cold like tile, but it could not be seen or told apart from any of the rest of the space. Bai Wei observed the floor before looking up only to be terrified by what he saw.
It was an amalgamation.
Not a human nor an animal. It would be best described as a thing, and it was looking directly at him.
"Do you want to live?"
The thing spoke in a cold tone as it swirled around him in an erratic manner. Hard to see, hard to understand, but it was definitely looking at him. It left him no time to think before speaking again.
"No?"
It then began to enlarge, wrapping around his person. If he did nothing, he would soon be engulfed by it. In a fit of terror and misplaced survival instincts, Bai Wei shouted "Yes! I want to live!".
Of course he wanted to live, he had previously resigned himself to his fate because he thought that he had no other choice, but once any other choice was given, he would absolutely choose that. Hell, high water, rain, or shine, anything but nothing.
"Good" The thing said in what sounded like a delighted manner, not that he had any time to process that before he was swept away. An array of colors passed by him in blurs as he was yanked through an insurmountable amount of distance. It was overwhelming and he felt that he would soon be sick before he abruptly came to stop again. Bai Wei felt secretly happy with himself fot not falling at the stop.
He was now in a white room; it was cubic and emitted a warm light from the surrounding walls. The light methodically brightened and dimmed in a fashion somewhat akin to breathing. As Bai Wei observed the room, the voice of a young boy came into his ears.
"Hello dear host! I am System 243! Are you ready to start your mission? :D"
"Mission?"
"Yes host! You are tasked to visit small worlds and gain the affection of a designated target within these worlds! In exchange for completing the missions, you can gain points that can be exchanged for anything that you can imagine!"
With these words, a small digital screen appeared. A cartoon dog popped up on the screen and began animatedly breaking down the specifics.
These worlds are all divided by difficulty into 7 different categories (f, e, d, c, b, a, and s in order of easiest to hardest) and each difficulty had a certain number of points that you could earn ranging from 500 to 1200. Secondly, the points are rewarded based on degree of completion. Namely, on a scale of favorability of 0 - 100, if you got a favorability score of 10 then you would get ten percent of the total number of points you could have earned. Lastly, the worlds are randomly assigned. Meaning, it was impossible to know the difficulty rating of a mission world before entering it.
The small dog jumped around animatedly after finishing its explanation. It wagged its tail excitedly at Bai Wei as if asking for praise.
Bai Wei smiled at the dog and collected himself before saying "Okay, I am ready to enter the first world".
At his words, a colder, louder voice echoed in the room "Affirmative, now entering the first world".
The room began to spin, slowly at first but quickly gaining speed. It went faster and faster until flashing colors began to appear in Bai Wei's vision. All of a sudden, a feeling assaulted Bai Wei and he felt like he was being thrown in the air, and it took everything in him to not start flailing around due to the sensation. This lasted for a few seconds before he came to a stand-still and everything turned black. Bai Wei resisted the urge to hurl as he opened his eyes to observe his surroundings.
He was in a wide-open area standing on a cobbled pathway, surrounding him were large medieval-looking buildings, extremely tall trees, and a bunch of young adults all wearing the same navy-blue uniform. They ignored him, talking and chatting with one another as they walked into a large doorway to the left.
"Ding! Target Identified! Target's Favorability is now at -25! Fighting!" The colder voice spoke.
A flood of information and new memories flooded into Bai Wei's brain, thoroughly overwhelming him. While he was still reeling, the softer voice yelled "Host! Move three steps to the left!"
In a daze, Bai Wei complied and found that he had knocked into a person, pushing them onto the ground. He was about to apologize when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a beam of light shooting straight towards him. Bai Wei recognized it as a laser beam and instinctively twisted to dodge it. He managed to get out of the way for the most part, but the light still hit his shoulder, and an agonizing pain shot through him.
Bai Wei turned to look at the now gaping wound in his shoulder, cursing to himself "You bastard system" before passing out.
