A firefly.

It was beautiful. The amount of light it lit was small, yet the feeling was big. I was only fourteen at the time when I saw my first firefly. I was just another ordinary kid. I had friends, and I had fun. Everyday, I'd walk up the hill, no matter how tired I was, and watch the fireflies.

The myth of the firefly. It was the light that came from the gods, believed to have provided us hope and guidance.

They were like the shine from a star- so exquisitely perfect, it was as if that firefly flew above the earth and robbed that shine from the atmosphere. I loved it, the feeling of exhilaration every night once I saw the fireflies envelope me in their warm light. I used to run around and try to grab those fireflies in a jar, even though I was going to release them later anyway.

Then, I met you.

I remember it vividly, like it was yesterday.
I had the flu, I remember. But nothing was going to stop me from going up the hill to see the fireflies. I regret going, but I can't make myself regret meeting you.

I remember. I was chasing this red firefly around a tree, because I was entranced by it's mysteriously unique glow. I had a jar open in my hand, trying to enclose the creature. I almost got it, I was this close, but I felt two jars hit each other. Then, I bumped into you. I wasn't watching my way, so I bumped into you pretty hard. You toppled over, I remember. It makes me chuckle to this day. Your hair was a mess, twigs clutching to your locks like a bee clings to a flower. Your brown strands falling stray across your face. You blew out a single thread, acting as if that helped you get all of it out of your face.

"I'm sorry!" I yelled.

Then you started laughing.

...

Just laughing.
