rainbow

I haven't seen a rainbow in some time,

that streak of magic that cuts

open the sky, making me believe

even for a second, that

beyond this world is something

beautiful.

but recently I've seen fragments of one

in the morning sky

on the way to school.

in oil spills left by long gone cars.

in my friends smiles as

I walk in the door.

and sometimes in the mirror,

my white skin and green eyes

and pink cheeks and blue soul

blend together to remind

me that colors still exist

on those bleak feeling days.

I know warmth will

seep back into this earth

like I know the rivers will run

after the ice melts.

the trees will blossom

and turn a sickeningly alive

shade of green,

one that infects you like

a plague and saves you

like the strongest remedy.

rainbows are coming,

the dandelions in my backyard

promised.
