III. FLINCH
poetry
written c . 2021
edited c . 2024I will not flinch.
Despite the fact that everything has changed,
Despite the fact that everything that was once comfortable and familiar has crumbled,
I will not flinch. I cannot flinch.
Despite how much it pains me to ignore you,
Despite the fact that there is no longer a blindfold obscuring the truth,
I had a part to play. A role to assume. I will not flinch.
Your horrific screams, your sobbing pleads will go ignored
They will not – could not – discover the truth. I will not flinch.
I will not sacrifice myself for you
You are already a lost cause, but I am not
They would destroy me and I would be just like you.
I will grieve for you.
I will not flinch for you.
