It felt nice seeing Huh Yunjin without feeling that strong feeling in her. Without feeling hatred and loathing.
And Chaewon was excited to keep feeling this way.
Until one day, Yunjin started acting differently.
It wasn't sudden. It was gradual. Chaewon hadn't noticed it at first, but she did ask how Yunjin was feeling.
There was huddled backstage, eating as everyone talked about everything and nothing. Chaewon only listened and laughed from time to time; she would only speak if she had something to add.
Usually, Yunjin would be the one leading the conversation, or sometimes, she would laugh and talk along with them.
This time, Yunjin was awfully quiet. She would laugh, sure, but that would be it. There were no comments, no funny corny jokes coming from her, and it was weird.
For Chaewon, it was.
While she was sharing her food with Minju, her eyes would always land on Yunjin. Her ears would hear all their stupid jokes, but her head would be filled with Yunjin.
Why was she so quiet? Is something bothering her? Did she get offended by a joke? Is she not feeling well? Chaewon wanted to ask all of those questions, but she couldn't. She couldn't just ask Yunjin in front of everyone else.
She felt stupid and felt like a coward for not being able to ask Yunjin in front of everyone. It was just a simple and kind gesture, but she stopped herself from doing it.
Instead of asking her in person, she sent Yunjin a simple text, asking her if she was okay.
Yunjin read her message as it popped up as a notification on her phone's screen. She looked up and showed Chaewon a thumbs-up while smiling.
Something about her gesture didn't stop Chaewon from worrying, but since Yunjin didn't seem to want to share anything, she didn't push for a real answer. She brushed it off and continued eating and listening.
She wished she had asked Yunjin further. She wished she had pried, but she didn't, and Yunjin's behavior had gotten worse ever since then.
She had become even more quiet as days and weeks passed by. It concerned Chaewon, but still, she never asked. She didn't want to be annoying, but she wanted to ask so badly.
Even the others were concerned, but the difference between them and Chaewon was that they asked Yunjin over and over. She just never answered them with the truth.
Chaewon still didn't buy any of it. There was definitely something off.
And Chaewon felt it even more when the president soon gained back her confidence and started almost belittling everyone again. This time, though, Yunjin kept her mouth shut.
Her whole intimidating aura was nowhere to be seen. She looked small. She looked timid. She looked like someone who didn't have the power to speak up. Everyone knows she has the power to speak up.
Everyone saw with their own eyes that she could protect everyone from this monster of a leader, and yet she was just standing there, head hung low, looking like she couldn't even protect herself from the president's harsh words.
It was really weird and concerning.
Something was definitely wrong, and it was obvious.
While the president has gone back to doing her own evil ways, Chaewon couldn't help but stare at Yunjin each time. She would look at her intently with hope in her eyes, pleading for Yunjin to look up and meet her gaze.
