Script 17: Thrown Words

Start from the beginning

She didn't know Yunjin was capable of acting this ... cutely.

Or was it just her that found out about this just now? Maybe Yunjin has always been cute... but that wasn't the point.

"We are ..." she mumbles and looks away again.

Chaewon stops herself from giggling at the younger girl's reaction. "See? You said it. We are friends."

"I know... but..." Yunjin sighs, "It's just hard to share with people..."

"I bet you've already shared it with your basketball friends." Chaewon tries to joke to at least lighten the mood.

But Yunjin's expression looked too serious, and she didn't have the heart to let out a laugh.

Chaewon's smile slowly faded as she watched Yunjin. The older girl sighs before patting Yunjin's shoulder. "Look, if it's something too serious and private, you can just say that."

Yunjin was now looking away, and Chaewon didn't know why. Was she scared? Embarrassed? Why couldn't she meet Chaewon's gaze?

The older girl wanted Yunjin to look at her again badly, but she couldn't just force it.

"I won't force you... just come back and attend club hours again."

Yunjin let out a laugh, "Give it a few days. I'll be back."

With that, she leaves, and Chaewon stands in the hallway alone, thinking of what Yunjin is going through.

Yunjin doesn't attend club hours despite her saying that she will. Chaewon wonders if she just said that to finally stop her from asking.

Chaewon wonders how Yunjin could lie and just run away without ever explaining what the hell was going on with her.

Chaewon wonders where the younger girl is and worries about her until they hear the speakers turn on all over the campus.

They were inside the auditorium, and everyone was startled by the noise. The static that abruptly came from the speakers caught everyone's attention.

Everyone looked up and stared at the speakers that were connected to the walls.

Everyone was confused. They didn't remember any upcoming events, but everyone thought that maybe there would be an important announcement.

They all waited for the principal's voice or maybe even some of the broadcasting students talking through the speakers, but none of those came.

Instead, they heard Yunjin's voice. Loud and clear through the speakers.

"She's not even that good- She- God, she's not even fit for any of the roles. That's how bad she is."

Hearing Yunjin's voice through the speakers felt weird for some reason. She sounded irritated and tired at the same time. They have never heard her speak this way before.

She has always been gentle when talking to people, loud when enthusiastically talking about something she likes, and rowdy when she jokes around. The only time they've heard Yunjin say mean things was when she was confronting the president in front of everyone.

They all thought she was talking about the president through the speakers... but why would it be through the speakers?

"And she thinks working hard can make a difference? Ha, if you're talentless, you're talentless. That's all there is to it."

As everyone listened and stared intently at the speakers up on the wall, Chaewon was starting to feel weird about all this. Was that really Yunjin talking?

"I mean- people are born with talent! Skill can be learned, you know? But her-" Yunjin laughs, "She's a hopeless case. She can't be as good as me, and everyone knows it. If you ask around, they'll tell you."

No one knows if this was a conversation between two or more people, but Yunjin was just talking, and no one was responding to her... or at least that's just what they were hearing.

And who was she even talking about?

"I know I should give her advice. I'm the best, after all. But do you really think she'd take it to heart if I told her to just give up on theater? I doubt she'd listen to me, anyway. Stubborn people always often do whatever they want, even if they know deep down that they're never going to be good at anything. She's one of those."

They hear a muffled voice from the background, and they hear Yunjin let out a sharp exhale before clearing her throat.

"Kim Chaewon," She says in an almost shaky voice before sighing, "She has no future in this kind of industry. She's just not good enough! She's useless, I'm telling you."

Everyone immediately turned and looked at Chaewon, and she felt so seen. So exposed. So humiliated. She felt as if cold water had been dumped on her, covering her whole body and making her freeze on her spot.

The speakers start making those annoying ringing noises before they hear Yunjin's voice again, but Chaewon can't hear anything anymore. She couldn't comprehend the words that were leaving Yunjin's mouth.

But she knows one thing for sure- and that is Yunjin is an asshole. She had a "good person" facade, and Chaewon felt so stupid for even doubting herself about Yunjin in the first place.

"Unnie-" Minju called out to her, but she didn't respond.

Everyone was slowly approaching her now, and the speakers suddenly became louder.

Yunjin says, "Kim Chaewon is nothing but a tryhard." and the speakers turn off.

It doesn't take a genius to know that everyone on campus heard that. Everything was connected, after all.

"Chaewon," Sakura calls out to her now, but she still doesn't respond. She only stands there. Minju immediately pulls her into a tight hug, and that's when she realizes that she is already crying.

Staining Minju's shirt as she hears everyone trying to comfort her. Throwing around insults about Yunjin here and there. Their insults were justified and valid after hearing Yunjin speak ill of Chaewon through the speakers.

How could Chaewon be a fool and think that Huh Yunjin was actually a good person? How can Huh Yunjin act like the hero everyone needs when she is just the same as the president?

An egotistical prick.

How could Huh Yunjin, out of all people, do that? How could she do that to Chaewon? How could she come and take care of Chaewon inside the infirmary that one time, act all nice and caring, then throw around those harsh words towards her like it was nothing?

Chaewon didn't understand. She couldn't comprehend everything. Her throat was tightening, she couldn't breathe, and she felt as if she was about to drown in her tears.

Only Kim Minju's gentle hand on her back was able to calm her down and bring her back to reality.

And God, did she hate Huh Yunjin so much at that moment.

Maybe she should have kept hating her.

Maybe she should have.
