The door opened and Lianjie stood in front of them. (Wei didn't lock it since Lianjie said he was leaving.)
"Don't worry, I found this man sneaking into the barn and cornered him here. I'll take care of him." Wei continued pointing the gun. "You'd better catch your flight. I've got this." Wei said.
"Put down the gun, Ma Fei. Stop pointing it at the Lord Guardian." Lianjie now had a gun he whipped out pointing at Shen Wei.
Shen Wei slowly put the gun down. Zhao lowered his hands.
"Lord Guardian, please forgive this overzealous guard. He is just doing his job."
"No harm done," Zhao Yunlan said. "How do you know me?"
"I was under your command during the war, Major General, You have no reason to remember me. But I will never forget your brilliance and kindness to the troops. I've followed your career at SID ever since."
Lianjie looked at Wei. "You look familiar and different from when you came here. Aren't you Professor Shen Wei, also a comrade of the Major General? But you looked different when you worked for Mofah."
"He's working with me to bring down Mofah's wildlife scheme around the world."
"I can help you! I am undercover SSA (Secret Security Agency), here to investigate and arrest Mofah for tax evasion and fraud. I hate what he plans to do, but didn't know how to stop it without blowing my cover and the 2 years I spent in that bastard's employ getting evidence."
Wei and Yunlan raised their eyebrows in surprise.
"I almost couldn't do it anymore, and just wanted him dead." Lianjie shook his head and looked down.
"Is that why he was ambushed in the restaurant? Because you didn't act like a guard there. You were under the table, I recall. Were you hoping he would be killed?" Wei always thought that scenario was odd.
"Yes, it would have saved a lot of money and time instead of trying him in court. And I hated him. But you saved him.
"What can I do to help you? Do you really want me to go to Rome?"
"No, we need all the evidence to put him away for his threat to endangered wildlife. Going to Rome is not necessary unless he wakes up and survives sepsis. I said that to get you out of the way of our investigation. We want to take him down when or if he recovers."
"Okay then, I have what I need now for the SSA case. Let me show you some secrets Mofah kept."
They followed him to the house and he led them up to the attic. He opened a safe that was behind a dresser. It was full of documents and plans of the wildlife sanctuaries and zoos.
Yunlan immediately plunged into them and smiled.
"This is what we need. I can't use it if it is taken illegally, but if you opened the safe for me, I can make a case that you are a trusted member of the household."
"Uh, obviously it will come out that I am NOT a trusted member of the household."
"Or you could get a warrant to search here." Wei was thinking of the safest way to get the evidence. "Or I could say he gave me the combination in case anything happened, which it did."
"You are also undercover. I think we get the warrant and do this by the book," Yunlan said. "Meanwhile, I will copy all these anyway. We can use them internally but not for court yet. You have a copy machine, Sargent Lianjie?"
"Wow you even remember my rank." Lianjie beamed with happiness. "I am honored, Major General. Yes sir!" He saluted.
"Just call me Chief, okay?" He patted Lianjie's shoulder and followed him to the copy machine.

Lianjie stayed at the mansion and Yunlan and Wei went home. Yunlan was a bit tired and sore at the stab sites, but he said nothing. After dinner, he laid against Wei's chest and read old documents from the temples that Wang got him from the SID library. He kept falling asleep, but kept waking up and resuming his study.

He finally leaned against Wei's chest and slept, snoring softly.
Wei didn't move, and stayed there with him for a while, then picked him up in his arms and put him in bed. Both cats followed and waited for them to settle. Wei hugged Yunlan to him, spooning. The cats purred against them, Frisky against Wei's back and Da against Yunlan's chest.
