In the Streets of the City

In the streets of the city,
they sit, starving.
At a McDonald's or Walmart,
working hard but for nothing.
Where is help? Where is heart?
Not coming, non-existent, but instead accusing.
The lucky call the struggling
lazy and manipulative,
and don't care that it's not true or
that they're hurting other human beings

because America's motto
is take care of yourself first,
don't think about the sufferings of others,
don't worry about if they're taken care of
if it doesn't affect you,
if you don't get something in return.
And while the impoverished perish
in the streets of the city,
the wealthy sit down to five courses of dinner.
