The prince had proposed to his girlfriend a month earlier during a trip to Kenya, presenting her with the same diamond and sapphire ring that his father had given his mother during their engagement 30 years ago.

According to a circulating story, the ring would originally have been the property of Prince Henry of Wales (the groom's brother), while Prince William would have kept a watch; however, upon learning of William's plans to propose to Catherine, Henry voluntarily gave the engagement ring to his brother William, who would get engaged and married first; and in the exchange made by the brothers, Henry opted to keep the watch.

On the same day, the bride and groom went to St. James's Palace for a press conference, and gave an exclusive interview to ITV News reporter Tom Bradby.

The bride's parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, and the groom's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, were absolutely "delighted". While the groom's father, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, was somewhat ironic, saying that "They've been practicing a lot".
