Gryphon was not a normal police dog by any means. For one thing, he wasn't a powerful German Shepherd or a swift, agile Belgian Malamute. In fact Gryphon was a tiny little Shih tzu-Bichon Frise cross.
The "Shichon" breed is not known for its ferocity or tracking skills. They aren't even considered one of the smarter dog breeds.
What they are known for is their cuteness. Shichons are great with children, because they are playful and snugly. They are also very patient when children try to dress them up and carry them around.
