Chapter 41: Kumpas

Start from the beginning

"Partially yes and partially no. I didn't get injured on purposed, I just volunteered to send the casualties to the hospital more than I used to. There was a certain ER doctor who looked really attractive saving lives." Jayden threw in a cheesy line.

"Really? Which one?" Tricia feigned ignorance.

"She's about 1.67m tall, wears glasses, has cute dimples. Do you know her?" Jayden described.

"Oh, I think I do. But she recently moved to pediatrics, didn't she?" Tricia played along.

"I also heard that she recently got married. To a pogi police officer." Jayden added.

"I'm not sure if the pogi part is right but I heard she has a 7 year old daughter." Tricia laughed.

"Wow, whoever that police officer is, he struck lottery." Jayden winked.

"I'll let her know." Tricia couldn't hold back her laughter anymore.

"Jokes aside, the contractor texted. Our house is ready." Jayden showed Tricia the text from their interior designer.

"Really? When can we move in?" Tricia was thrilled to have their new home ready.

"Any time you like." Jayden grinned.

"Shall we go to IKEA this weekend? We can get all those cute little shelves for the house. Anak was telling me she wanted a reading corner in her room too." Tricia already knew how she wanted to add to the renovated flat.

"IKEA is always a yes." Jayden nodded.

"Can't believe we're finally moving in..." Tricia and Jayden had been creating their new house for months.

"Finally a place to call our own." Jayden kissed Tricia's forehead.

"Mummy, my classmate told me that her baby sister was born yesterday." Kaela and Tricia were having an ice-cream date after her enrichment lesson. Jayden was at the station for a last minute meeting.

"She must have been excited to be an Ate!" Tricia smiled.

"She was! She said that she would be the best Ate to her baby sister!" Kaela ate another scoop of her ice-cream.

"Mummy, can I have a baby sibling too?" Kaela looked at Tricia, who almost choked on her ice-cream.

"Anak..." Tricia steadied herself.

"Mummy, please? I promise I will be a really good Ate to the baby!" Kaela was already jumping the gun.

"You really want to be a big sister, Anak?" Tricia asked.

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" Kaela nodded.

"Actually, Mummy has a secret to tell you. Do you want to know?" Tricia beckoned for Kaela to come closer.

"WOAH! REALLY? YOU'RE NOT LYING TO ME, RIGHT MUMMY?" Kaela gasped.

"I was thinking we could give your Daddy a surprise? Do you think you can keep it a secret?" Tricia had a plan in mind.

"Uh huh! I bet Daddy will be really happy about the surprise too!" Kaela was thrilled to be part of the surprise.

"Mummy! Let's get this! It has bread on it!" Kaela showed her selection to Tricia.

"Isn't it a bit to early?" Tricia asked.

"You can show this to Daddy as part of the surprise!" Kaela suggested.

"You're a genius, Anak." Tricia chuckled.

"Like you, Mummy." Kaela winked.

"Should we get a pair of shoes as well?" Tricia and Kaela were looking at the next aisle.

"This one!" Kaela picked one out after careful consideration.

"Daddy's going to be done soon, shall we go home and get ready?" Tricia looked at her watch.

"Quickly! We have to get home before Daddy does!" Kaela couldn't wait for the surprise.

"I'm home!" Jayden walked into an empty living room.

"Kaela? Trish?" Jayden called out but no one replied.

"Daddy! Surprise!" Kaela jumped out from the kitchen.

"Surprise? What surprise?" Jayden was confused.

"Mummy and I have a surprise for you!" Kaela confessed as Tricia appeared behind her.

"But it's not my birthday or anything...Did I do something wrong?" Jayden was getting nervous.

"Did you?" Tricia teased.

"Uh...I didn't pack Kaela's lunchbox yesterday?" Jayden answered shakily.

"Correct. But that isn't the surprise, Daddy." Kaela laughed.

"This is." Tricia handed Jayden a white box.

"Will something jump out at me?" Jayden eyed the box.

"Maybe?" Tricia shrugged.

"Open it!" Kaela urged.

"What...No way...You mean..." Jayden looked at the contents of the box and got the hint immediately.

"It's been 6 weeks." Tricia confirmed.

"Gosh, Trish...I..." Jayden was too touched to be coherent.

"Are you crying?" Tricia watched as tears welled up in Jayden's eyes.

"I just...I'm just so grateful for you, Trish. You, Kaela and our baby..." Jayden held Tricia and Kaela's hands.

"Time to work extra hard. Diapers and milk powder aren't cheap, Daddy." Tricia gently squeezed Jayden's face.

"School too, Daddy." Kaela chimed in.

"Anything for my princesses." Jayden kissed Kaela's forehead before pecking Tricia on the lips.

"Princesses? You're sure this little one is a princess?" Tricia raised an eyebrow.

"I mean, having another little princess that looks as beautiful as you would be amazing. What do you think Kaela? Do you think Mummy will have a baby brother or baby sister?" Jayden picked Kaela up.

"Hmmm, I personally prefer a girl so I can play with her! My friends all say that their baby brothers are irritating..." Kaela had heard lots of hair-pulling, toy-snatching stories.

"Well, you two have to wait for a while then..." Tricia watched as the father-daughter duo got too excited.

"Mummy, Daddy...can I help name my baby brother or sister, please?" Kaela requested.

"Anak, we still have 7 months to go..." Tricia chuckled.

"Never too early to start. Right?" Jayden agreed with Kaela.

"Right! I'm going to give him or her a really beautiful name!" Kaela hi-fived Jayden.

"I can't believe you two..." Tricia rolled her eyes.

"I love you, Trish. So, so much." Jayden peppered kisses on Tricia.

"Me too!" Kaela wanted kisses from her parents as well.

"You too..." Jayden and Tricia flanked Kaela's sides and showered her with kisses.

"Mummy, Daddy. Do you know what 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 is?" Kaela quizzed her parents.

"4?" Jayden answered.

"Nope. 1!" Kaela corrected.

"Anak...do I have to talk to your maths teacher?" Tricia blinked.

"Daddy, Mummy, Kaela and baby are ONE family!" Kaela explained.

"You little prankster!" Tricia tickled Kaela's sides, eliciting a high pitched laughter from the girl.
