The coach journey seemed interminable as they ventured deeper into the countryside. The landscape outside shifted from rolling hills to dense forests, mirroring the fluctuations of emotions inside the carriage. In an attempt to alleviate the monotony, they had started a game of eye spy, but it quickly crumbled into a dispute over the rules, with Charles and Thomas bickering relentlessly over the fairness of their choices. Elizabeth, ever the peacemaker, valiantly tried to mediate, but her efforts only seemed to fan the flames of their disagreement.

Growing weary of the ceaseless squabbling, Elizabeth finally gave up, her temples throbbing in protest. She closed her eyes for a moment, attempting to find solace in the darkness behind her eyelids. Her request for silence was met with begrudging compliance from the two brothers, their expressions now reflecting not only frustration but also a tinge of guilt.

The atmosphere in the carriage was thick with unresolved tension, and it was clear that they had reached a breaking point. The confined space and relentless arguments had taken their toll on all three travellers.

The journey carried on, marked by two necessary stops for toilet breaks. During these brief interludes, they reconnected with Catherine, Andrew, and Peter. Catherine, with her sharp wit, couldn't resist teasing Elizabeth about her predicament. "My dear, have they driven you to the brink of madness yet?" she asked with a playful glint in her eye.

Elizabeth replied with a weary but good-natured smile, her humour tinged with exhaustion. "I'm barely hanging on, Catherine."

It was during one of these breaks that Peter, the youngest of the group, decided to join in the banter with a mischievous grin. He looked at Elizabeth and quipped, "If you want, Eleanor, I can swap places with you. I rather enjoy watching these two act like children."

Elizabeth couldn't help but chuckle at Peter's playful suggestion, appreciating the levity he brought to the situation. She could see that Peter was, in his way, trying to ease the tension and bring some humour to the journey. His youthful exuberance was a welcome contrast to the seriousness of the older brothers.

As the journey continued, Elizabeth finally reached a point of resolution. Turning to her bickering companions with a newfound sense of determination, she declared with a hint of sternness, "If you two can't find a way to get along, neither of you will have the honour of dancing with me at the ball."

The threat hung in the air, and to her surprise, it had an immediate and profound effect. The brothers exchanged a telling glance, realizing the gravity of the situation. Elizabeth's headache gradually subsided, and she settled into her seat. The newfound unity and cooperation among the brothers, triggered by her threat about the upcoming ball, had caught her by surprise. She observed their interactions, wondering if this shift marked the beginning of a deeper understanding among them. With each passing mile, she couldn't help but hope that this long and trying journey would ultimately lead to a more harmonious and united family.

Just short of four hours into their journey, the carriages began to slow as they approached the imposing gates of an estate. The grandeur of the house was not yet in sight, but anticipation filled the air. The estate's entrance was a testament to its opulence, with meticulously crafted ironwork and intricate stonework.

Thomas turned to Elizabeth with an expectant smile, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Eleanor, prepare yourself for the grandeur of the house," he said, his voice filled with a touch of awe. "I've visited a few times, but every time I see it, I'm left in wonder."

As the gates swung open and the estate grounds came into view, Charles's demeanour underwent a remarkable transformation. His posture, once slouched, straightened into a more formal bearing, and he meticulously adjusted his attire, ensuring he looked his absolute best.
