The crowd applauds more, a few whistles here and there.
The host chuckles. ''You're too kind!''
''How do we get close to him?'' I whisper to Ghost, as the host continues with his speech.
''Working on it..'' He mumbles back. His eyes never leave the target, as his eyebrows are folded into a sly frown.
Then suddenly, the host jumps off the stage. Making his way graciously through the crowd. He seems to shake some gentlemens hands, bowing before their wifes.
He reminds me of a sly fox, with his fake smile and mischievous expression.
The women seems to love it for some reason. Some are letting out high pitch squeals as the host stops in front of them. Like meeting a celebrity.
This man might be way more powerful than we realize.
I hold my breath as he walks closer to us. I feel Ghost placing his hand gently but firmly around my upper arm as he tries to pull me out of the host's way.
But it's too late, as he spins and stops right in front of me. Our eyes meet.
Fuck.
He looks me up and down, with a small frown and an even wider smile.
Then he grabs my gloved hand and kisses the back of it softly.
What happened to just bowing?
The men start to rumor as the women let out a surprised, or maybe even disappointing gasps.
I look at Ghost. He just stands there wide eyed, frozen. His brain is working overtime to figure out what to do now. Neither of us ever expected this.
Ghost lets slowly go off my arm, and places his hand on my lower back. Giving me a soft nudge, as to say do something.
I decide to curtsy to the host, giving him a soft and kind smile.
He smiles back in response, approvingly.
Thank God.
The host doesn't let go of my hand however, as he takes a step closer to me.
''What is your name, sweetheart?'' He asks, his voice coated with a thick layer of self righteousness and arrogance.
It takes all my strength not to roll my eyes at him. He is standing so close, that his strong perfume is making me feel dizzy.
''I..uh...I...'' I stammer. Crap, I didn't think to come up with a fake name.
'K-Katerina..'' I blurt out, my voice shaky.
He chuckles at my nervosity. ''Well Katerina, you are a lucky girl. I pick you to be my dance partner.''
''W-what?'' I stammer, but I am unable to say anything else as he pulls my hand towards the dance floor.
I look over my shoulder as I see Ghost being absorbed by the crowd forming around us.
The host nods towards the orchestra as they start the music again.
I feel a lump in my throat, not sure what to do next other than graciously floating along.
''So Katerina...'' The host smirks, breaking our silence with the same mischievous
look in his eyes. I notice he is just a few inches shorter than Ghost, but still towering over me.
''Are you enjoying my party?''
''Yes sir..'' I reply politely.
