The sun peaked in through the window. If you listened you could hear the birds chirping and the sound of the crashing waves, but Nico could never know about the wonderful sounds. Instead he just lay in bed in silence. With the world never making a sound.  He use to get annoyed with people talking to him constantly and wished that everyone would stop. But now, he missed it dearly. When he was twelve him and his cousin Percy were playing around on the dock with a barrel. The game was, you go into the barrel then they would push it off the dock, once you were under water you would push yourself out of the barrel and swim back to the surface, then you grab the barrel and do it again.

The two had already done it several times and nothing had gone wrong. Until it was Nico's fifth turn. He jumped into the barrel, Percy pushed it over and rolled it into the water as fast as he could. The barrel went plummeting into the water. Nico tried to push himself out but his jacket was stuck on a piece of wood. Because it was dark and the salt water burned his eyes he couldn't open his eyes. He wriggled around trying to free his jacket from the barrel's grasp. He eventually gave up on the jacket and unzipped it and slipped out of it. He pushed himself out of the barrel.

He started to swim to the surface when he started to feel dizzy, his entire body was pulling him down, it felt as if his head was about to explode. His eyes started to flutter shut. He finally took a breath inhaling strong salty water. His body gave in to the cold deep depths of the ocean and his little body slowly began to sink when two arms wrapped around him. They brought him back to the surface and onto the dock.

Nico didn't remember much just the fact that he felt pressure on his stomach and soon enough he was coughing up water, and that just before he passed out he could have sworn that he saw a gold tail in the distance. Once Nico woke up again he was rushed to the house, apparently he had to much water in his ears at the time and they didn't know and slowly over time Nico lost his ability to hear. They tried a hearing aid but it never worked. For the last two year he has lived his life in complete silence. No music, no speaking conversations, and no more normal for him.

Nico sat up and groaned. He flung himself over the edge of the bed so his legs were dangling off the bed. He looked out the window, it was going to be a nice day today he could tell. He stood up and walked to his dresser. On his dresser was a mirror, not a huge one but a decent sized one. His hair was an absolute mess, he ran his fingers through it giving it some shape. Once it looked normal he found his outfit which was black shorts that went down to his knees, a slipknot t-shirt and converse. He got dressed and walked out of his room and into the kitchen where his mom, sister, and dad were. "Hello! I'm not dead." Nico says accidentally shouting.

"Good morning." His mom signs, "Glad to know your not dead." Bianca his sister signs. Nico smiles and nods. Nico's dad just nods. "Bitch." Nico signs, his dad asks his mom, "What does that mean?" His dad never bothered to learn sign language. "I- nothing." His mom says. "No, what did he say?" He asks. His mom sighs and says, "He called you a bitch." his eyes go wide. "You will not speak to me like that! I am your father." He says sternly to Nico, of course Nico had no idea what he was saying, he didn't even attempt to lip read, his gaze wondered to Bianca who was translating everything he was saying. Nico nodded and mouthed 'thank you.' to her. She nods and smiles.

Nico opened a cupboard and grabbed a box of cereal. He poured it into a bowl, then put milk in. He brought it over to the table and began to eat it. "Nico." His father asked. He got no reply, "Right..." He kicks the table grabbing Nico's attention. "What?" Nico asks dryly. "You know that new fishing spot that we went to last week, I was wondering if you wanted to check it out? Since you like exploring." He says, Nico looks to Bianca who was translating all of it. "Yeah sure." Nico says eating his breakfast. "Wonderful!" His father says. Nico nods, he was able to lip read some times, but if they have a mustache or if they are talking really fast most of the time he couldn't tell what they were saying.
