Chapter 10: A Surprising Confession

Start from the beginning

"During lunch yesterday, my friend Talia accidentally bumped into Isa's friend Becky, causing her to spill her drink all over her clothes," Sawyer explained. "Becky seemed mad at Talia even after her apology, so she felt pretty bad."

"But that sounds like just an accident," Ellie pointed out.

At the word accident, Teddy frowned. She had been doing so well in keeping the situation with Penelope out of her mind for a while, but that single word was like a bucket of ice cold water snapping her back to reality. She hastily typed into her AAC app.

"Hey, why don't we go to gym class now?"

The other three girls turned to her, before Ellie and Sawyer looked at the clock on the wall of the classroom.

"Right, we should probably go now," Sawyer said worriedly.

As the four girls walked to the gym, Teddy got a notification on her phone. She looked down onto it and saw that Leah had texted her, asking if they could meet during lunch.

Teddy hastily typed a reply, asking where they should meet. She was relieved to see that Leah had not asked her to sit at the table Leah had sat at yesterday, but concerned when the reply said to meet at Professor X's classroom. This was out of character. Leah loved the cafeteria as much as Teddy hated it. She always said that the cafeteria was the best place to make friends during lunch. So for her to suggest meeting somewhere else during lunch...

Well, who could blame her for acting different? Teddy thought, wincing. Penelope's her best friend.

"Teddy?"

Teddy looked up from her phone to see that Dora had started walking right beside her. Ellie and Sawyer were looking at Teddy and Dora, with concern on Sawyer's face and confusion on Ellie's.

"¿Estás bien?" Dora asked.

"I think my friend Leah needs me during lunch," Teddy finally explained through her AAC app after a long time of typing and retyping, unsure of how much information she should give.

A look of understanding crossed Sawyer's face. Meanwhile, Dora's face remained as stoic as ever, while Ellie still seemed puzzled. "Don't worry," Sawyer assured Teddy. "I understand. I'll explain that something came up for you to the others."

Teddy signed a sincere "Thank you" to Sawyer.

Compared to yesterday, gym class was uneventful. Math class was also uneventful, for the most part, except that could have sworn she saw a flash of annoyance on Professor Four's face as soon as he saw her noise canceling headphones. However, due to her accommodations, they seemed to be unable to do anything about it.

Then, the time for lunch finally came and Teddy waved farewell to her friends as she made her way back to Professor X's classroom. Leah was not there yet, but she found Professor X sitting at the desk at the front of the classroom.

"Hi Teddy!" he greeted chipperly. "Are you the friend Leah's going to meet today?"

Teddy nodded as she sat down at one of the desks in the classroom. Putting her backpack down on the floor, she leaned over and grabbed her lunch bag, starting to eat the food she had prepared for herself last night. She figured that since it would just be her and Leah, she could just leave her backpack on the floor instead of hanging it on the back of her chair like she usually does.
