his bare feet padded against the wooden floors as he made his way into the living room.

luke hadn't seen or heard from calum in six days, and it was starting to freak him out.

as he fixed himself up a bowl of cereal, he attempted to process the information the news channel was providing him, despite the fact that it was too early in the morning and he was hungover.

however, once it finally went through his head, he had dropped the ceramic bowl; it shattered to a billion pieces, as did his heart.

breaking news! presumed dead teenager valentina roberts was spotted entering a home, only to exit and report a suicide to the police moments later. although the body has not yet been removed from the scene, it has been identified as calum hood, local resident and former close friend of valentina. the police say that it was an overdose suicide but it has not yet been verified by doctors. stay tun-

{3 years later}

luke still tends to think about calum and his death and valentina.

he couldn't remember who turned the television off that morning, or who helped him to his room and into bed.

in fact, he couldn't really remember anything that happened in the past few years of his life.

the only thing he knows for sure is that valentina and calum are both gone. and although they present two different forms of absences, their lasting effects break and numb people quite the same.
