The neighborhood was nicer than most when it came to the crime world.

Usually you would choose more secluded places in case something went down.

It would raise so many red flags if there were gun shots in a rich neighborhood like this.

"This is the part of the job I don't miss." I said and leaned back, watching the house.

"Yeah, not the most glamorous part." Nate said with a laugh. "Part of me wants to break in." I said as he shook his head.

"Let's maybe take it a little slower than that." He said as I rolled my eyes.

"Boring." I said with a laugh, focusing on the house.

We sat around for a while? Nothing happened for a while until someone came out of the house.

I didn't recognize the guy at all which could be very good or very bad.

"Who's that?" I asked as Nate shook his head. "I don't know. He looks lik-" He started but was interrupted by someone shooting at our car.

"Shit." I hissed and started the car, fucking down so I wouldn't get hit. "Go go go." Nate said as I sped off, feeling the familiar burn of a bullet in my side.

"Fuck me." I grumbled, putting my hand on my side as I drove off. "Did you get hit?" He asked as I nodded.

"Yup." I said and focused solely on getting us out of there.

Sure, my side was hurting but the feeling of adrenaline coursing through my veins felt so good.

I could feel the addiction to danger very quickly coming back, which meant leaving here and going home would be much harder.

When we got back to base Nate turned to me. "We gotta get your side fixed up." He said as I nodded.

"Yeah, I guess that would be a good idea." I said and pulled my bloody hand away from my side.

"Shit, that hurts." I mumbled and got out of the car.

"What happened?!" Jake asked as he and Corey got out of their car.

"They were onto us and started shooting." I explained as we made our way downstairs.

"So they must be smarter than we originally thought." Corey said as I nodded. "They're ten steps ahead at any given moment." I explained.

"That's all we're gonna do for the night. You guys can go home." I said and started walking to the infirmary.

"Aren't you coming?" Corey asked as I nodded. "After I finish things up here." I said with a sigh.

The fact that we're getting shot at for staking out meant that these people were either hiding something or they were constantly on edge, meaning someone was out to get them.

I didn't know which was worse.

"Alright, get back to the house in one piece. Okay?" Corey asked as I chuckled. "I will try." I said as Nate and I went to get my side looked at.

"I have a sick feeling that this is going to get really bad really fast." Nate said as I pulled my shirt off, looking at my wound.

"Yeah, and I have a sick feeling I'm going to be here for way longer than a week." I said as he nodded.

I hated that I would have to do that to Julia and the kids but this situation was confusing and dangerous.

The longer that Sam was missing, the more danger he would be in.

"Definitely." Nate said then started working on the wound in my side.

We sat in silence as he stitched me up. All I could think about was what I had to tell Julia.

She was going to be so hurt that I was going to break yet another promise, but I had to hope she would forgive me.

"Alright, boss. You're all stitched up." Nate said as I nodded. "Thanks man. I'll see you at the house." I said as he nodded, leaving the room.

That's something I loved most about Nate. He didn't question anything I did and really just did as I asked.

He knew I needed to deal with some stuff here and wasn't going to question what it was.

I sat there for a second before I pulled out my phone, FaceTiming Julia.

After a couple rings, the call connected and a guys face showed up on the screen.

"Uh.." I said as he chuckled. "Bri is putting Addie to bed." The guy explained calmly. "And who are you?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"Oh! I'm Austin, I work with Bri." He said as someone gasped.

"Is that the hot boyfriend?" A girl asked as I glared at the guy who answered my girlfriend's phone.

"Let me see that." A girl with pink hair said as she took the phone.

"He is hot! Damn. Bri is such a liar." The girl said then looked up. "Who are you talking to?" Julia asked as her voice got louder.

"Your hot boyfriend." The girl said as Julia took the phone. "He called and I know you miss him so I didn't want you to miss the call." Austin said as Julia's face appeared on the screen.

"Thanks. I'll be right back." She said then started to go up the stairs.

"Hey, sorry about that." She said quietly, almost as if she was deflating. "It's okay." I said simply as she frowned.

"You look upset..." She said then started anxiously twisting at her necklace.

Yeah, I was a little jealous that she was hanging out with a guy and that he felt comfortable enough to answer her phone.

It made me nervous to tell her what I had to tell her since it would give her more of a motive to leave me for the stupid ass string bean who answered her phone.

"I'm fine, just had a long day." I said as she frowned. "Are you in the infirmary? Did you get hurt?" She asked with fear.

"I'm fine, sweetheart. I just needed to talk to you." I said with a sigh. "Oh. What is it?" She asked quietly.

I knew I needed to tell her I was going to be staying longer but before my mouth could cooperate, my heart already made the decision to speak.

"I just wanted to tell you that I love you." I said as her face softened slightly. "That's it?" She asked as I nodded.

"Yeah. That's it." I lied. I knew it was stupid of me to keep her in the dark like this, but now wasn't the right time to tell her that I was going to be away.

She was clearly hanging out with people and being social. I didn't want to make her sad when she actually seemed happy for the first time all week.

"I love you, too. You scared me though." She said and put her hand on her chest. "I didn't mean to. It's just been a long day." I said with a sigh.

"You're having fun though, so I'll let you go. I'll talk to you tomorrow." I said as the familiar sadness filled her blue eyes.

"Oh...okay. Um..are you going to bed soon?" She asked as I nodded. "Yeah, gonna go back to the house and get some sleep. I love you and I'll talk to you tomorrow." I said then blew her a kiss and hung up.

I needed to cut our conversation short so I wouldn't make her sad and so I wouldn't be lying to her anymore.

It wasn't really lying though, considering I was going to tell her eventually. It just wasn't necessary that I told her right now.

I would just have to tell her tomorrow.
