Its crazy how much your life can change.
If you would have told me a year ago I'd find out about an estranged uncle who was damn near a millionaire I would have laughed.
But that's exactly what happened. I was at my moms and I's small kitchen table opening bill after bill it seemed before my eyes landed on a huge vanilla envelope with hand written cursive on it.
It immediately peaked my interest and I put down the twizzler I was eating and opened it up.
"I'm sorry to inform the sister and niece of the late Tommie White that he is deceased-
I couldn't even read anymore. I had no idea that I had an uncle and to top it off he's dead.
Poor uncle Tommie
Before I could even speculate I heard my moms keys in the door.
"Flora I'm home babe." I heard my mom call out to me.
My name was Florencia but it was too swanky for me so I went by Flora.
"I have an uncle?" I said as soon as she walked in, the smile on her face dropping.
She sighed and but two fingers against her temple.
"He reached out to you?"
"No, he's dead." I said
Her head whipped around quickly and she immediately snatched the vanilla envelope I had out stretched to her.
Her eyes quickly read over the paper and she spoke aloud as she did.
"I'm sorry to inform the sister and niece of the late Tommie White that he is deceased. The funeral will be held in Novacane township and more details will be sent to you later on. Do not worry about the the funeral costs, everything will be paid in full. Including a hotel room for your stay along with transportation if needed.
The reading of the will be read the day after the funeral and I'm informing you ahead of time that both of you will receive something, so attending will be in your best interest. If there are any more questions please refer to the number down below."
***-***-**** ~Vladamir Law Firm
There seemed to be way more words on that paper than what she read, but I think she was just dumbing it down for me and reading the important parts. Reading stuff by lawyers could be really hard to read sometimes.
"The life finally caught up to you....huh Tommie." I heard my mom mutter something along those words under her breath.
I didn't know what she meant by that but I didn't want to bombard her with to many questions. Her sibling had just died. I didn't have any siblings but I knew regardless that it'd be hard to deal with something like that.
She stared at the paper maybe a bit longer than she needed to obviously in disbelief.
Realizing that I was still in the room her head jerked up to look at me and she took a deep breath.
"Well I guess I should tell you about old Tommie huh?" She said as she pulled out the chair next to me and sat down.
"Where do I start huh? Well Tommie and I only really had one another growing up. We were raised by a single mom that quickly turned to drugs once things got to hard. She didn't know who either of our fathers were so we got our last names from her. Kinda like you bug... except I know who your father is he's just not shit. Anywho it didn't take long for child service to get involved when I was 9 and Tommie was 13. He often took care of me you know....I didn't know what was going on really so Tommie had to be the voice for both of us. He was adamant about us not getting separated, so we didn't. We jumped from place to place for awhile til we settled in a......ok foster home in a small town. Neither of us ever got adopted but that was for the best. As we got older the more determined Tommie got to make money. He was older so as soon as he turned 18 he'd be the first to go while I still had 4 years in the system. He soon got mixed up with the wrong kind of people but when I was younger I never really realized it. All I knew what that my 16 year old brother way coming home with wads of cash he usually spent on keeping us looking good and fed in the house. The foster home we had was nice but there were to many kids in there. It was made to house 8 kids but they had 16. Once he left I was sad and felt alone but he often snuck into the house to be with me or he'd sneak me out to come stay at his. As I got older though I became wiser. It didn't make sense that my 20 year older brother was staying on the nicer side of the the neighboring town. I'd ask him what he did and he'd say he was a mechanic. He worked on cars and motorcycles. When I was young that worked on me because I knew nothing about how much the average mechanic made. But when I was 16 he was finally able to adopt me and I moved into that big house with him. It was amazing at first but I soon learned where that money was coming from and I told him I no longer wanted anything to do with any of it. I just wanted to live a normal life for once. He understood where I was coming from but he couldn't step back. He refused. So when I turned 19 I took the money I had saved up from working as a waitress at a diner and left. He offered me money but I didn't want any more ties to that life he lead. We both knew it'd lead to nowhere but a dead end. And for him I see it finally has...."
After hearing my mom tell me her history with uncle Tommie I felt like I was in movie. That everything she told me was a lie and she was just gonna laugh it off, but she didn't.
"What'd he do that was so bad ma?" I asked her
"Honestly he never gave me a straight answer....but I had my suspicions."
And we left the conversation at that...
