Okay so today I was doing my Latin homework and I randomly found Regulus in the dictionary so hey, how could I stop myself from reading the definition?
And that's how I discovered that, after the meanings "young king" and "Regulus" (gens from the Roman Empire),
There is "basilisk".
Yes.
The snake.
THE BASILISK.
REGULUS'S NAME FUCKING MEANS BASILISK.
So now my headcannon is that Reg is the Slytherin heir in his generation, cause some before there's Tom Riddle and in the next one Harry, but we never know if there's one in the Marauders Era.
I think Regulus never discovered it
(I mean he died at 17),
So the Chamber was never opened.
It may make no sense but REGULUS MEANS BASILISK OMFG
