Chapter Forty-Five

~Thea's POV~

Wairua flies up sharply, hooting softly as the mist clears around us. We've landed at the bottom of a hill, in a forest. Instantly, we're drenched: it's raining, and the trees are blown back and forth in the wind.

"Do you have your dagger?" asks Videl. He has already reached to his belt and pulled out his knife, jerking it forward so that it elongates into the spear.

"Yes," I say, pulling out the silver dagger with the rubies from my backpack. When I had unzipped it, I had noticed that all my photos had been put back neatly, and there's also a folded-up piece of paper that looks suspiciously like a letter.

I look at the silver and ruby dagger. It's the same familiar shape, the same length and the same light balance, but it looks foreign. I remember being entranced by the emeralds the first time I had really paid attention to the weapon, when Loki had held it out to me on the plane ride to the Nest. This dagger has almost become an addition to my body, but looking at it now, I feel like I've never used it before. There are faded crimson stains at the tip of the blade. I hadn't properly cleaned it since I had used it on Loki at Disney World. This is my father's blood.

While Videl walks up the hill, probably to survey Neidra's mansion, I lift up my dagger, letting the rain wash away Loki's blood. I watch the blood drop to the forest floor, and watching the red mix with the rain, I feel hollow inside.

At that moment, I feel my golden necklace vibrating against my neck, causing the dolphin necklace to bounce again. I look down; the necklace is shimmering, and although it's a pretty sight, dread sinks into me.

I don't have much time to think about this, because Videl comes loping down the hill. The rain has plastered his curls against his head, but for once, he's not complaining about his hair. He is looking at me cautiously, as if afraid of starting another shouting match, but also determinedly, his amber eyes glinting, telling me that if cooperation means another shouting match, he'll probably gag me.

"Neidra has wards," he says over the rain, Wairua flapping to sit on his shoulder, "I can't Jaunt right into the house, and-"

"There's a back door," I say, "Near the stables. We can try to get in through there."

Videl is surprised. He'd probably forgotten that I've been here before. "All right then, you're leading. But stay in the trees until you can help it. I'm sure Neidra is expecting us to try and rescue Angelique."

"What about Wairua?"

Videl glances at the owl, who clacks his beak and then vanishes in a flurry of black mist. "He's our scout." He gestures to the left, "Lead on."

We're both speaking in pleasant, polite voices, but there's also a very tangible bitterness.

I get lost in the sprawling estate grounds at first, much to Videl's annoyance, but after a while, trying not to think about Loki hurting Angelique, I find the back stable door that Lifolas had been trying to escape out of. The memory makes my heart hurt, so I push it down.
