Dylan Storm is ready as ever to meet some new people and let loose at Cortals university after "losing" her best friend to the shackles of a relationship, something that she has sworn off of after seeing her parents crash and burn. She is completely...
She returns my smile with one of her own and her eyes slowly scan my frame, "Welcome to Cortals University! What's your name?"
"Dylan Storm." I respond, praying she isn't a fan of my dad's band and somehow recognizes the name.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Dylan, let me look for your room number and see if your roommate has checked in with us yet."
She clicks around on her computer for a few minutes and frowns before quickly covering it up and spinning away from her computer to a large pile of brown envelopes with what I assume are keys inside. She sifts around the pile before pulling one out and spinning back to the desk to hand it to me. The envelope says what must be my room number on it, "444A," and below it has "key one" written in Sharpie.
Angel numbers... maybe starting college won't be terrible.
"Here is your room key and a map of the dorm building in case you get lost on your way up to the room. If you lose your room key it will cost 75$ to get a new one made so don't lose it. It seems like your roommate hasn't checked in yet but I'm sure they will be here soon. Have a great start to your freshman year!" She gives me another one of those huge smiles and I return it with a head nod and a quiet "thank you."
Turning away from the desk so she can help the next happy family, I put the map and the envelope on top of my suitcases and make my way toward the line for the elevators. It takes what feels like years before it's my turn in the elevator, but when it is I sigh in relief and stuff both of my carts in the cramped box, hitting the button for the fourth floor and watching the door close.
The doors open on the fourth floor and I half-heartedly use the map to get me to the very end of the hallway where my room is. Unlocking the door I get both of my carts in the room and throw my backpack and duffle bag onto the bed, jumping onto it afterward and stretching out my shoulders from the weight they've been carrying for the last hour.
"Well, I should probably start unpacking." I say to myself before reluctantly sitting up from the bed and listening to the mattress groan.
It takes me six hours and a lot of sweat but finally after all of that, my room is almost fully unpacked and set up.
My black and pink comforter is laying flat on my bed underneath stacks of pillows and over drawers that have been stuffed full of my clothes. My makeup, jewelry, string lights, and lamps are all set up on my desk and all of my nice clothes are carefully hung up in my closet over top of my elaborate collection of shoes. The fridge, microwave, and electric kettle are all plugged into the wall over in the communal space and my roommate's side of the room is still as empty as it was when I got here.
The only things I haven't set up yet are all of my posters and photos with Ivy and my mom but after six hours of setting everything else up by myself, I think I can hold that off until tomorrow and get some food instead.
They don't give us our meal cards and IDs until tomorrow night when everyone's parents have left so I guess ordering pizza to my dorm is one of the only options I have to make sure I don't die of malnutrition. I dial up a place that my mom and I ate at nearby when we came to visit last spring and order a small pepperoni pizza for delivery, hoping I don't fall asleep before it gets here.
