Dylan Storm
"This is the first day of the rest of your life, Dylan. You should be excited!" My dad loudly says through my headphones as I get the last of my stuff into the dorm building's lobby.
"Yeah, Dad, I am excited. I'm just tired from lugging all my stuff to my dorm from the parking lot." I say with an eye roll, my thinly veiled disappointment shining through my voice.
"I'm sorry I couldn't be there to help you move in, Squirt." I cringe at the nickname he tries to use to make us seem close, "But, at least I called you when you got to your dorm, unlike your mother." He says, trying to justify his absence by bringing my mom into it.
The mom who has almost full custody and only couldn't be here because she had her one-year sober AA meeting for the drinking problem that was caused by him cheating on her with his college student assistant, Amanda when I was a freshman in high school.
"Mom was on the phone with me the entire drive up here, good to know you're still trying to turn co-parenting into a competition like the last four years."
"I'm not trying to turn co-parenting into a competition, You know I didn't mean it like that, Dylan." I hear a door close on his end of the phone and roll my eyes, knowing his girlfriend coming home means the end of this phone call. "Amanda just got home so I have to go, but I'll check my calendar and see if I can swing both of us coming up for parents' weekend next month."
I almost want to tell him not to bother to make the two-hour drive from New York City to Cortals University with his 24-year-old girlfriend whose least favorite person on the planet is her geriatric boyfriend's daughter but as the ever-doting daughter I am, I just give him a half-assed, "I understand, Dad. I'll talk to you later."
"Bye, Squirt. Have a good time at college." He says quickly before the dial tone rings out through my headphones.
Best first day of school ever am I right? Note the sarcasm.
I slip my headphones off my ears and let them hang around my neck while I take in the sight of my dorm lobby in front of me. While I have multiple carts that I'm going to be pushing by myself into my dorm I'm surrounded by families with giant smiles on their faces helping their children move their carts toward the elevator.
There's no point in feeling sorry for myself, I'm already here, so I grab both of my carts and wheel them over to the registration desk where a cheery blonde girl is handing out room assignments and talking to families. I ended up just requesting a random roommate after my best friend, Ivy, committed to FIT instead of Cortals because I didn't really know anyone else who was going here.
The family in front of me finishes with the check-in girl and I'm up next, slapping on my best fake people-pleasing smile as I come up to the desk in front of her.
