Sleeping with the light on

A breeze of cool fresh air grazed through the bedroom, loud banging emitting from the door.

"Dave open the damn door!"

Bro had been at it for what felt like hours.

Dave sat up and looked at the shaking wooden rectangle

"what is it, bro"

The blonde spoke, eventually getting up to unlock the door and almost getting a punch in the face from his brother.

He looked out in the apartment behind Bro to see Cal... fucking ugly ass puppet... he was leaned against the counter and looked Dave dead in the eyes through his thick black glasses.

"You need to get out sometime. How about you get in the sun today and make a friend or whatever. I'm gonna be inviting Jake over and I want you out for a few hours."

Dave groaned. Ugh.

"Now put on some sunscreen and get your ass out there. Maybe make friends with the new neighbours on the 2nd floor."

Dave rolled his eyes and Bro forcefully helped him put on sunscreen before he shoved him out.

"asshole..."

Dave grunted, descending the stairs while trying to make up a stupid rap.

He looked at the plethora of doors.

"Fuck where does this guy live?"

Dave walked down the second floor, mumbling to himself. He turned the corner and bumped into a new face. A small troll, with little nubby horns. Dave's eyebrow raised.

"WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING FUCKASS."

The boy tried pushing past him but Dave grabbed his wrist.

"WHAT THE-"

Dave pulled him back.

"are you new here? never seen you around."

The troll nodded slowly. Pulling his wrist from Dave's grip.

"sorry 'bout that. strider, Dave strider ."

He watched as the troll he just met's nose scrunch up.

"KARKAT VANTAS."

Karkat looked tense.

"so like, my bro told me to meet you and stuff. And he like wants me out the house-"

Dave shoved his hands in his pockets, trying to keep a calm, careless, cool demeanor. Which had seemed to piss off karkat.

"AND?"

"let's hangout or something! There's a park nearby"

Karkat sighed and opened his apartment door, making Dave tense up secretly.

"KANKRI I'M GOING OUT FOR ABIT. ILL BE HOME BEFORE DINNER."

Dave glared into the apartment which looked almost fully pitch black on the inside, but another grey troll came out the darkness.

"It's great that y9u made a friend, Karkat, 6ut y9u sh9uld put 9n sunscreen first 6ef9re leaving. Y9u kn9w h9w sensitive skin is t9 the sun, y9u may get skin cancer!"

Karkat groaned and was subjected to his brother lathering sunscreen all over his face and hands.

"BYE KANKRI, ILL BE HOME LATER."

Karkat grabbed Dave's wrist and ran from the apartment. Once they were on the ground floor he stopped and let go.

"DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO THE PARK?"

Dave nodded and they started walking there, making small talk on the way.

"So like. Tell me about yourself karkat. What makes you YOU."

Karkat shuddered.

"WELL DICKWAD, IF I HAVE TO SAY, THERES NOTHING MUCH. I STAY UP ALOT AND SLEEP THROUGH THE DAY. I LIVE WITH JUST MY BROTHER AND THAT'S KINDS IT. I ALSO LIKE ROMCOMS AND BOOKS."

Dave nodded, seemingly actually invested in what Karkat was saying.

"WHY DO YOU WEAR THOSE SHADES? ARE YOU LIKE, A SUPERHERO OR SOME WEIRD FAIRYTALE SHIT??"

Dave laughed.

"Nah, it's personal reasons."

Dave sat on a swing and looked in the sky, karkat sat next to him and started swinging.

"WHAT DO YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT?.."

Karkat roughly stopped swinging, looking at Dave.

"We could've went to my house to play video games, but my bro has his boyfriend over. He gets all pissy when I go home when he tells me not to."

"LITERALLY CANT RELATE. MY BROTHER LIKES WHEN I'M HOME BECAUSE ITS LONELY. WHEN I'M NOT THERE HE LIKE KINDA PANICS."

Silence stroke between them.

"Well uh... maybe we can go out and get some food"

Dave was surprised by karkat's tone shift. He nodded and the two began walking to some shitty rundown McDonald's. Dave ended up getting a burger and karkat got some nuggets. The silence was loud.

"SO UHM... I GUESS WE DONT HAVE TO EAT DINNER.. MAYBE YOU CAN COME TO MY HIVE! THERES NOT MUCH TO DO REALLY... BUT IT'D BE FUN! I'VE NEVER HAD ANYONE OVER BEFORE BESIDES ANYONE KANKRI KNOWS!"

Dave blinked and nodded

"I'd love to bro but what the fuck is a hive? You mean your apartment???"

"EITHERWAY"

The two boys set off back to the apartments. Cheerful? Maybe. But enjoying each others company certainly.
