The question reminds me why I'm here and I need to quickly clear the silence before this gets awkward. "Uhm–I just want to tell you that I can't do this anymore."
He looks at me for a moment. "Do what?"
His head tilts and I gulp nervously. "This little flirty friendship thing." I pin him with a look. "I realized I only did it to get someone else mad, and I feel like I used you in a way..."
I trail off my apology but he motions for me to keep going, crossing his arms over his chest.
"And you don't deserve to be led on like this. Because you're a really great guy Liam, seriously, you rock." I admit and it earns me a laugh. "But I like someone else—actually I'm dating someone else."
"Jackson, right?" He sighs at the question.
My eyes widen and I nod. "Yeah...how did–"
"I saw you two after the game." he shrugs. "You both look really happy, so I understand why you came over here."
A small smile plays at my lips as I start to feel less anxious. "Oh thank god," I blurt out. "I thought you were gonna take this another way—not that I think you would've but..."
Ah fuck.
"Don't worry about it Em." he laughs. "I get it. I mean, I wish you would've liked me back but...I guess the world had other plans."
I give him a small smile out of pity, darting my eyes away for a second. "Yeah...I guess it did."
"But as long as you're happy with him, I'll be okay." He says and I realize why I like him. As a friend.
"Thank you Liam...for uh, being cool about this."
His arms finally uncross from his chest and hang by his sides. "Why? Did you think I would be some overreacting guy who's super duper jealous."
I scratch the back of my neck. "Uhhhh...well, not really?"
Liam takes in a breath. "Well, you can cross out the overreacting part, but the super duper jealous...hell yeah I am." he laughs. "Jackson got a great girl. I would give him props if he didn't look like he wanted to kill me half the time on the field."
A bubble of laughter climbs up my throat before I drop my head in my hands. The two of us laughed for a minute and I honestly have to say this went way better than I thought it would.
"Ok, but seriously, I do enjoy hanging out with you Liam. So is there any possibility of us being friends?" I ask.
"Of course we can be friends, Emery. And I promise no more flirty jokes." His hands are thrown up in surrender.
"Good to know." I nod and walk down the steps. "And uh...Liam?" I ask, turning around.
"Yeah?" He looks back at me, holding the screen door open.
"I hope you find a really great girl too one day. You deserve her."
His eyes were squinting in the sun, but I could see the smile on his face. I wave goodbye and hop back into my car.
And the smile on my face is practically hideous.

I returned home and changed my clothes before heading out again. Driving over to the address I was given, I park down the road.
I push past a few bodies and I'm barely able to shove my keys in my pocket before I see something that makes me stop.
Remember Nicole? Yeah. Living, breathing bitch Nicole. That Nicole, was sitting on Jackson's lap.
Or trying to at least. If it wasn't for him immediately standing up like she was the plague. A few words were exchanged and by the look on his face, they definitely weren't the nicest.
I narrow my eyes at the scene in front of me and my nails dig into my palms so hard I think I might break skin.
God I want to fucking slap her.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck this. That's so immature.
I flick my eyes up and the moment they land on Jackson's, I turn around. I know he's seen me and in a few moments I'll probably be getting an explanation I don't need.
I saw everything I needed to see.
But I'm not mad at him. Not at all.
I'm fucking pissed at her.
