"Yeah, they can 'pen-alize' you for it," she replied, using some weird pronunciation she probably heard from hanging with Mia.

"You mean 'peen-alize,'" I corrected her, rising an eyebrow.

Sarah snickered, sharing a confused look across the room with Mia, who was sitting on her bed. Both of them had the same expression, to which they both looked as if they were about to burst into giggles.

Yes, it sounded like another word, but that wasn't my issue. Take it up with the English language.

So immature.

"No, I mean 'pen-alize,'" Sarah emphasized the first part of the pronunciation, glancing back at me before humorously looking back to Mia, who began giggling when she looked at me.

Sarah burst into laughter not a second later, which amplified Mia's laughter.

Before I could say another thing, I realized both of them were absolutely laughing at me

Before I could say another thing, I realized both of them were absolutely laughing at me. My own sister wasn't even on my team here.

I tried to swallow back the small lump in my throat, rolling my eyes. My heart couldn't help but hurt a bit. I knew I was being sensitive, but I tried not to look too hurt.

"You're laughing because you guys know I'm right," I muttered.

Sarah wiped at her eyes from laughing so hard. I could tell she was trying to suppress her laughter for my sake. "Em, no one I've met has ever said it like that."

I admit, we never used that word around each other previous to this moment, but I suppose I assumed we both pronounced everything the same way

"Yeah, Sarah's right. I've never heard that pronunciation. I think it's pen," Mia chimed in, standing up. She pulled together a straighter face than Sarah did, purposely avoiding looking at Sarah for the moment.
