Those doe eyes would be the death of him, truly. One look from her and he was utterly captivated, a prisoner to her gaze, unable to look away even if he wished. Even now, he stood locked and staring down into her eyes that shined as bright as a thousand suns.
He was such a pitiful fool for her, and it blatantly showed in the way the word, "Yes," spilled out of his mouth with no hesitation without even fully hearing her request.
"I want it here." Ife said, running her finger along his wrist.
"What?" Jamie balked, feeling out of sorts the moment her hand touched him.
"A bird. You said you'd let me choose your first tattoo." Had he really agreed to such a thing? A fool he was.
"I want to come with you too." He would agree to many things, but taking a fifteen year old into a tattoo parlor was certainly where he would draw the line. "No. Absolutely not. I'll show you when I get back, so be good and wait here for me." He said, flicking the tip of her nose, laughing at the way she scrunched up her face.
If he knew that this moment with with her would be the last for a painfully long eight years, he would have tried to memorize the exact pitch of her laughter and voice—her bright, brilliant smile. He would have tried to etch it all into his memory with the hopes that the memory of her would stay clear and unaltered in his mind.
It was futile and wishful thinking, however, because as each day passed, the sound of her voice and laughter began to become muddled until he couldn't even remember the sound of it anymore. It was painful to experience losing the memory of all the things he loved about her despite his desperate attempts to cling to her.
The only memory of her that wouldn't fade was the permanent etching of a small dove tattooed on the inside of his wrist. The black ink served as a reminder of Ife.
A reminder that she was his little bird, his dove.
