"Father." The five year old child ran into the living room with a smile.
He had been doing this since he was little, but it never got old.His father didn't even look up at him. "Father?" He repeated, this time more forcefully.
This time, his father looked up and smiled in response. Zhan felt like he might break down. He could hardly contain himself anymore. It just felt so good to be in his presence. But... he was still mad at him. No, no he wasn't mad. At least, not about that. He was mad for something else, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
It all started when he was three or four, and one day he saw him walking home alone. It must have been a really bad day, because he was walking down the street in tears.Zhan was shocked by the sight. He knew he shouldn't interfere in adults'business, but he couldn't help it. He rushed forward and wrapped his tiny arms around his knees. He started crying with the man, who then knelt down and rubbed Zhan's back while comforting him.
After a while the little kid stopped crying.
Then the man turned to him. "What's wrong Zhan?" Zhan could barely answer him, but still managed to stammer out, "Daddy..." The man smiled warmly. That's when he began smiling a lot more often. Zhan never thought of him as a big brother. In fact he would say that their relationship had always been weird. When Zhan was younger, he would play around with his daddy, pretending to be a monkey, or a dragonfly. Later however, it just seemed like his father tolerated him and was even kind of proud.
Zhan was sure he was too young to know, but that made him very happy. It almost made him forget what happened that night in the woods. Almost. He remembered it clearly now that he was older. He remembers waking up in the middle of the night, hearing a loud cry. He went downstairs but there were no lights on and no one seemed to notice that anything was wrong.
A few minutes later, the man appeared. He seemed confused at first when he saw Zhan, but soon realized that something must have scared him during the night.
"Zhan, don't you know better than to walk alone?" There was no anger or worry in his voice. Instead, Zhan just heard sadness. "Well, if you keep going down here, I will come down and escort you myself."
"No thank you." Zhan said and immediately ran upstairs. The sound of his running footsteps echoed through the house. He tried to control his breathing as well as possible to avoid detection. However, every time he thought of his father's face, tears formed once again and rolled down his cheeks. He wanted nothing more to run into his father's arms and forget the horrible thing that happened the other night.Zhan fell asleep crying after that.
The whole family spent their meal in silence. The Wing Clan came that night to kill the whole family.Zhan's dad, being a martial artist fought with them for quite sometime but was later outnumbered and and as a result of that, the Wing Clan massacred the whole family except Zhan. They anticipated he might be useful to their clan later in the future.
The next morning, he woke up and discover that his parents were dead.Zhan was still traumatized by the incident, and was unable to sleep. He felt lonely, and that was something that he could not withstand.
When the time came to leave, he packed up his belongings. As soon as he left, he couldn't stop crying. There was no one to say goodbye to him.
"Zhan, are you okay?" He was startled by the voice and turned around quickly to see another young girl standing behind him. She was about six years old.
Zhan wiped his tears off his eyes and smiled. "Of course I am!" He said cheerfully. The girl tilted her head slightly in response and continued to look concerned at him.She walked over to him and hugged him tightly. "Come home whenever you want. And you can call me sister".
Zhan hugged her back and held her two hands before letting go. "I will! Thanks.
He waved goodbye, before running off down the road. He didn't know where exactly he wanted to go, but he knew that wherever he ended up, he was most likely not going to be accepted as a real member of the clan. He had no choice but to leave his hometown behind. He didn't know if he ever wanted to return.
He knew that the moment he was discovered, the Wing Clan members would kill him in an instant. So he ran away as fast as he could. For a while he just wandered aimlessly, trying to escape from those terrible memories forevermore. But he didn't get far. He tripped over some roots on the ground and fell headlong. Pain shot through his entire body as he hit the ground hard. The wind was knocked out of him, and his chest hurt horribly from impact.
Zhan lay there trying to breathe through the pain for a little while. Finally, a strange sound drew his attention. A rustling was coming from a bush nearby. Someone or something was creeping up on him. He grabbed a branch near his hand and swung at whatever was coming towards him. Suddenly there was a scream, followed by the noise of crunching leaves and branches. Then the same sound again.Zhan was terrified. All he wanted was to get away.He was going to leave the area.He crawled back up and got ready to run.
Suddenly there was a familiar voice calling, "Zhan Yan please stop! You need to rest. You're bleeding. We need to treat your wounds!" Zhan's head snapped upwards, and the blood drained from his face when he noticed who was approaching him. It was one of the Wing Clan members. He had lost count of how many people he had seen slaughtered in front of his very eyes. He looked around frantically as he watched them surround him. The other children were hiding behind bushes.
They were staring at him. Some of them looked scared. He couldn't blame them. These people were merciless killers. The only one that didn't seem scared was the girl who was tending to his wounds. She had taken off her hood and sat beside him. Her hair seemed longer than the others. It reached her waist. He decided to ignore her and focus on trying to get away instead.
Unfortunately for him, the Wing Clan member was quicker. He lunged forward and pulled him to his feet. He struggled wildly, screaming incoherent things. Then something cold touched his head. He froze instantly.
The Wing Clan member grabbed him and started dragging him through the forest. The only thing he could think of at that moment was 'Run'. He had no idea where they were taking him, but he needed to find someone before it was too late.He struggled against his captor desperately. It took him a while, but eventually he managed to loosen the grip around his neck.
Once he was free, he tried to take off. He sprinted through the trees. He ran as fast as he possibly could. He didn't care where he went. Just as long as he didn't end up somewhere that required the help of the Wing Clan members. He suddenly came across some bushes blocking his way. He jumped over them as quickly as he could. He didn't realize where he was going, because he just wanted to be as far away as possible.
