Knock knock

I stand up and walk towards my apartment door, where I was met with my boyfriend, Charles

"Hi maddy" he forced out, his face deadly serious

"Hi! Come in!" I smiled at him and step aside to let him in. He walks past me with his shoulders slumped and his usual light aura is a lot heavier

"We need to talk" he says looking me dead in the eyes

"What is happening Charles?" My smile fading at his tone, and the slight tears that are burning up in his eyes.

"I'm so sorry Madelyn" he sighs out, the full name, not the Maddy, not the Babe or Mon amour.

"What is going on?" I ask him and lay a hand on his shoulder, but he flinched away.

"I don't think this is working out"  he admitted while looking at the ground.

"What? I mean we were totally fine a week ago, what happened?" My voice is shaking and breaking, how did it change so fast

"I just-" he shrugged

"Please tell me what went wrong" I croak out while the first tears are falling from my eyes

"I met another girl" he whispers, I feel my heart break with his words and when he looks up at me I see tears trailing down his face

"I met her Monday at the cafe, we had a really good time together. I'm sorry Madelyn but I think my love is gone for you"  he admits with a shaking voice

"Please tell me about her" I plead with tears flooding my eyes

"Why would you want to pain yourself like that, Madelyn?" He asked, never using my nicknames again. This shit if for real

"Just tell me, then I know what went wrong" I smile sadly at him, and he nods

"Well, her name is Charlotte, and she has stunning brown hair with brown eyes! Her personality is just like honey, so sweet. She is studying architecture here in Monaco and she is also from here" he tells me with the biggest smile on his face, and that well spark in his eyes that he once had when he was talking about me, suddenly forgetting the situation we are in

"She sounds, perfect." I whisper and let a shake breath out.

"I'm sorry, but I knew it wasn't fair for you otherwise. I'm so sorry Madelyn, I will always love you, but just in another way" he tells me with a little smile on his face

"We had a lovely 3 years together, and I will most certainly never forget you and our lovely memories. But maybe it just wasn't meant to be, or it was meant to be but not meant to last. And the past few months I saw you more as my friend, Madelyn. And not as my girlfriend." He managed to get out while tears are streaming down both of our faces.

"It's alright, I mean, I just want the best for you Charlie. And if that isn't with me I will need to live with it. I'm just confused we're it all went wrong." I cry out and look at the promise ring he gave me 1 year ago, in the beautiful France.

"I don't know, Madelyn. But I will always care for you" he gave me a little smile

I slowly slid the promise ring of my finger and laid it in the palm of my hand to examine it. It's crazy, he promised to forever love me a year ago, and now he is breaking up with me for another woman.

"I guess I won't need this anymore" I softly say as I open his hand to lay the promise ring in there. "Give it to her please, she deserves it, she deserves to be loved" I whisper out and look him in the eyes, his eyes filled with sadness as he gave me a apologetic look.

"Maybe in another lifetime, Charlie"
